For our first stop in Bangkok, I had booked at this Michelin-starred restaurant, Saneh Jaan. Normally, the guidebook is a safe bet, even when travelling.
As a reminder, here is the itinerary followed:
The concept
The concept is quite simple, as it is a Thai restaurant, offering traditional recipes. So, one just expects the best in local cuisine.
The setting
The setting is quite standard, even if one feels that an effort is made, it looks a bit stuffy and old.
The menu
The menu offered, as mentioned above, is a traditional Thai menu. Two tasting menus are also available, but we’ll skip that and go straight to the traditional Thai dishes my wife and I love.
The meal and the dishes
We will ask for all the dishes to arrive at the same time, so that they can all be shared.
Here are the dishes ordered, all in one photo.
- Tom Kha Gai (coconut milk and chicken soup): one of my wife’s favourite dishes. Unfortunately, the sauce was acidic, and spicy to an unnatural level for one of the mildest dishes in Thai cuisine. Zero
- Chicken Green Curry: again, one of our favourite dishes, but without aubergines and with a sliced sauce (how is this possible in a Michelin star restaurant)
- Pad Thai: failing a pad Thai is not that easy, right? The noodles were overcooked and so was the shrimp
- Traditional Thai Omelet with crab meat : If even your hotel breakfast omelet is better, I don’t know what to say… And why the crab is not in the omelet, we will never know.
The service
Pas grand chose à redire, c’était rapide (peut-être un peu trop).
The atmosphere
Very cantine, not very intimate and above all not at all Thai.
Bottom line
To say that we will not return is an understatement. If you see this review and you visit Bangkok, don’t go there! I have even written to the Michelin Guide, as it is a disgrace to have such a place listed 5 years in a row.
