Review: Restaurant Hoja Santa, Barcelona (1* Michelin)

During a stay with friends in Barcelona, we wanted to have lunch at Tickets, the restaurant of Albert Adria, former chef of El Bulli.

If we never had to make a reservation, well it will not be so this time since we are refused at the entrance. The attendant directs us to the new Adria concept, Hoja Santa.

The concept

It is a Mexican-inspired restaurant, but with the Adria touch, and especially its exceptional cuisine. The reception and the service are perfect, and a small ritual of welcome of all the catering brigade takes place at the arrival of each group of customers.

The dessert station, which we come to taste on another table

The setting

The decor is totally urban Mexican inspired. We love it. The service is done at the table in raw wood. No fuss in with white tablecloth.

Reminders of urban Mexican culture everywhere
Some traces of the passage of celebrities
The decoration is perfect even in the conveniences
The dessert tasting room is very inspired
The accessories on the tables are very stylish

The menu

The card is very much inspired by Tickets, I must say. There are certainly Mexican dishes revisited, but the El Bulli touch is there.

I took a picture of the dessert menu so you can get an idea:

Le meal

Everything is excellent until the post-dessert.

Excellent scallop carpaccio
Beet and avocado tartlet
Guacamole to share
The famous trompe l’oeil olive of El Bulli
Smoked sardines and sea urchins
Caesar Salad Pizza
One of my favorite Mexican delicacies: tamales
Tuna tartar on a bed of sliced avocado

The menu is made of bites to share, excellent if you are with friends. The pictures speak for themselves.

Honeycomb
Grandma’s pie
Corn in trompe l’oeil, chocolate sauce
Tamarinds, tamarind ice cream
Charcoal Meringues as an after-dinner drink

The atmosphere

Surprisingly quiet, but we arrived at the very beginning of the service.

The decoration is very modern, but inspired by Mexican traditions

The service

Excellent service while remaining relaxed.

Bottom line

Perfection in a restaurant? Still not, but a great experience if you visit Barcelona!
