For our first evening in Chicago, I decided to take my wife to a restaurant I like, not for the food, which is decent without being gourmet, but for its view: the Signature Room, located at the top of the John Hancock Center observatory.
The concept
The concept is simple enough: it’s a classic American restaurant, located at the top of one of Chicago’s tallest towers.
The setting
There’s nothing special about the decor, which is a little dated for the ’90s, but the view of the whole city is absolutely exceptional – probably one of the best in Chicago, far superior to that from the Willis Tower.
The menu
The menu is what I’d call an American Steak House, with seafood starters, meat dishes and fairly basic desserts.
The meal and the dishes
For starters, I’d order half a dozen oysters, which will be fresh and excellent.
For the main course, I’ll be ordering the filet mignon, blue for me, served with mashed potatoes. I must say that I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality of this meal, and was expecting something definitely less good.
The service
The service will be very good and attentive, our waiter charming and we will be satisfied.
The atmosphere
The ambience is fairly calm, with all our customers enthralled by the exceptional view of the Chicago skyline.
Bottom line
A great experience at the Signature Room, and an excellent start to our stay in the Windy City.
