I didn’t have high expectations when I entered this lounge, as I did with regard to the American tourism industry in general, but in the end I was almost pleasantly surprised.
I had planned to spend an hour or so in the lounge between flights from Boston to New York on United. Unfortunately, the global computer failure that grounded many planes around the world meant that I would be spending many hours there.
You will find a summary of the articles on this trip to Boston, New York and New Orleans at the bottom of the page.
Lounge location
The lounge is located in the middle of the concourse, upstairs, by the doors from which United flights depart. Not exactly close to the security checkpoints, but it is close to the boarding gates.
Eligibility
Here we are dealing with the merry goings on of the US airlines. As this is a domestic flight, traveling in domestic first (a pompous term used to designate business class on these flights) does not give access to the lounge.
To be eligible, you must therefore be traveling on a domestic flight with a connecting international or transcontinental flight in business class or higher on United. If you are flying on United to reach another airport from which you will take a business class or higher flight with a partner airline, you will not have access to the lounge but only to the lounge at the airport of departure of the international flight.
Access is also open, regardless of travel class, to those with United Gold status when departing on an international flight or Star Alliance Gold status on a partner airline. I will therefore be admitted on this basis.
It’s funny to note that members of the partner airlines’ loyalty programs are treated better than members of United’s, but that’s how it is in the USA.
The lounge
I arrive in the entrance and there is a fairly long queue. Normal: many flights are postponed or canceled, so there are a lot of stranded people who come to find refuge here.
Then I enter the lounge proper.
It consists of a single, very bright room with a view of the tarmac and the planes parked at the gates.
There are different areas with different facilities depending on how you wish to set up.
As is often the case in the USA, it has a bar.
All in all, it was quite nice and fairly comfortable. I expected worse.
Catering
When I arrived, the breakfast offer was in place.
Fruit, yoghurt and hard-boiled eggs are available.
Bread, a fairly limited selection of cold meats and cheese….
Fried potatoes and mini beefburgers.
And finally, omelets with melted cheese inside.
For drinks, please ask at the bar.
Without saying that it’s poor, it’s still not great at all.
As I will be waiting much longer than expected, I will also be able to try the lunch offer.
You can find salads there…
Wraps and mini sandwiches.
Cheese and charcuterie
Rice and chicken.
There was really nothing exceptional in terms of choice, but I have to admit that it wasn’t bad. Well…for what it is…
Facilities
The lounge has toilets but as far as I remember no showers.
Atmosphere
A priori rather pleasant, but the crowds due to the cancellations will make it a real zoo.
Bottom line
When you don’t expect much, you are rarely disappointed, and that was the case here. A fairly decent lounge, poor food but of acceptable quality. We’ve seen worse.
