New Orleans-Boston on Delta in domestic first: a very comfortable flight

Another very pleasant flight on Delta in domestic first, which continues to increase my esteem for US domestic flights, with quality catering and a very pleasant crew.

These improvised holidays are coming to an end and it is time for me to return to Europe, but before that I am going back to Boston to see Olivier again. A flight without anything in particular, except that it is taking place during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris.

You will find the summary of the articles on this trip to Boston, New York and New Orleans at the bottom of the page.

Here’s a reminder of the air routing for this trip.

Booking

I booked a one-way domestic first class ticket (the equivalent of business class for domestic flights) for 350 dollars a few weeks before my departure. When you leave it late, prices go up…

Ground course and check-in

I arrive at the airport at the end of the morning by Uber from my hotel. The driver drops me off right in front of a luggage drop-off counter located on the pavement in front of the terminal. A formality that is quickly carried out and which saves me from having to queue at the counter.

You can’t say that the airport is bursting with activity, it’s quiet, and I’ll get through the security checks in no time.

I will then go to the Delta Sky Club to pass the time, where I will treat myself to some excellent chicken while starting to watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics on my iPad.

I leave the lounge, gradually boarding and passing various bars and restaurants on the way to my gate, and notice something quite surprising.

I was already surprised not to see the opening ceremony broadcast in the Delta lounge, even though the airline was a partner of the event, but I won’t see it broadcast on any of the many screens that I will see on my way.

I would sit for a few minutes on a seat in front of the gate to try following it, but the poor quality of the airport Wi-Fi finally got the better of my patience.

Boarding

IMG_8956

Something that has been quite rare for me lately, boarding will start right on time. Priority will be respected and a minute later I am in the cabin.

The cabin

I was a little afraid of the cabin of this 737 given the state of disrepair of the United one I had taken between Boston and New York, but although the plane is anything but new, the cabin is in good shape.

IMG_8959

It is of course in a 2-2 configuration.

IMG_8960

On the other hand, the small size of the screen shows its age compared to the device I had between New York and New Orleans.

IMG_8962

The legroom is comfortable for a flight of this duration, but it seems to me a little less than on the previous flight.

IMG_8963

Bottles of water are already on hand and, as is often the case in the USA, the window blinds are closed to protect from the heat. They will not be reopened either for take-off or in flight.

The flight

As boarding was taking place, the person in the seat in front of me decided to recline their seat. Normally, I wouldn’t have a problem with that, except that it looked like they were using momentum to make sure that the seat regularly touched my knees. I made sure to let him know by kneeing him in the back every time. The flight attendant comes to see him to tell him that he can recline his seat, but not bother the people behind him, and that he has to put the seat back upright for take-off.

Apéritif orders are taken on the ground during boarding.

The take-off is quite turbulent but after a few minutes the drinks service begins. Although I’m not in the front row, the flight attendant starts with me because ‘I deserved it with the inconvenience I experienced on the ground’ and if it happens again, I should just call her. A sentence said loudly enough for the occupant of the front seat to hear, and obviously it paid off because I won’t have to complain about him again. Professional and diplomatic.

So I’ll have a Jack Daniel’s.

She also tells me that they have taken into account my choice of flat dish made online the previous week and that it has been loaded on board.

A little later, she will come to take orders for drinks and the service will begin.

As on the outward journey, I had pre-ordered my dish online: mushroom and herb ravioli with tomato and mascarpone sauce, balsamic wild mushrooms, served with mixed salads and balsamic vinaigrette.

IMG_8973

The salad is quite good and pleasantly refreshing.

The ravioli has a lot of taste, the stuffing is light, the sauce is good. Less bland than the chicken I had on the way here, which I had to season copiously.

IMG_8974

Once the meal was over, I tried to connect to the Wi-Fi to follow the Olympic Games ceremony via streaming, but to no avail. If the connection does not pose any problem, the speed is not sufficient and it keeps cutting out. It will be finished by the time we land in Boston.

For the trouble, I’ll have another Jack Daniel’s.

IMG_8976

The end of the flight will be peaceful and it will soon be time to prepare for landing.

Landing and arrival

We will arrive in Boston almost 40 minutes early, but I will wait for my suitcase for 30 minutes. It’s like being at Roissy airport!

Another 15 minutes of waiting for the Blue Line and I’m on the bus that takes me to my hotel.

Crew

Very friendly, efficient, present in the cabin and…diplomatic…

Bottom line

A very pleasant flight, which would have been perfect with a slightly better Wi-Fi connection.
