Compère Lapin New Orleans: a good introduction to Creole cuisine

A clearly renowned restaurant, Compère Lapin offers quality Creole food in a lively atmosphere.

For this first dinner, I didn’t take care of anything and let my friends organize it. At the end of the afternoon, the verdict came in our WhatsApp group: let’s meet at “Compère Lapin”. An opportunity for me to rediscover Creole cuisine, which I had vaguely frequented some thirty years ago during a stay in Florida (true) but had not tried since.

You will find the summary of the articles on this trip to Boston, New York and New Orleans at the bottom of the page.

The concept

Compère Lapin is a restaurant serving Creole cuisine.

If the name intrigues you, you should know that Compère Lapin is a character from Creole tales who uses his cunning and mischief to defeat and ridicule the powerful, represented by the slave masters and plantation owners. These tales come from African folklore and have been influenced by European tales such as the Roman de Renart.

The setting

Warm atmosphere, brick walls.

The menu

It serves local dishes with a European influence, mainly French and Italian.

The meal

We arrive on time but will have to wait a while for our table to become available.

The menus are brought to us and we order quickly.

I’ll start with the grilled Louisiana prawns with Calabrian chili butter.

Not very filling but very good. The sauce is tasty and well spiced, but shelling hot prawns by hand is no sinecure.

The wait between courses is long, and the fact that we are a large table does not explain everything. But it gives us time to chat, which will make the time go by more quickly.

My main course finally arrives: goat’s cheese with curry/sweet potato gnocchi/cashew nuts.

The meat is super tender thanks to the slow cooking. The sauce is nicely spiced and the whole thing reminds me of beef bourguignon with goat’s cheese and curry.

It’s perfectly spicy, not too much and not too little.

We will skip dessert and I will have an espresso to finish. A delicious espresso, which is quite rare in the United States, just to be clear.

The atmosphere

Noisy room, very noisy between the loud music and people talking even louder.

The service

Pleasant staff but slow service.

Bottom line

A first, conclusive contact with the local cuisine, even if the atmosphere could be better.
