Sheraton Ann Arbor: Great Upgrade, But the Service Was a Nightmare

For my first night in Michigan, I stayed at the Sheraton Ann Arbor, conveniently located near the client site where I was scheduled for a presentation the next morning. All of my colleagues were also staying at this hotel.

Booking

I made the reservation for this property 10 days before my arrival. I used my company’s Corporate code to benefit from a discounted rate. For once, I didn’t book the standard room but opted for a Deluxe room, which was slightly more spacious. The price difference from the basic room was only $20 per night.

Arrival

I completed the check-in formalities 48 hours before arriving at the hotel. During this process, I noticed my reservation had been upgraded to the Presidential Suite! A rare occurrence in the U.S., definitely worth mentioning.

I arrived at the hotel around 5 PM on the day of check-in. The receptionist was quite indifferent, barely explaining any of the hotel’s amenities. I had to ask about everything: breakfast hours, service availability, the presence of a club lounge, a pool, or a fitness center. Honestly, the service culture in the U.S. is really slipping these days!

Suite

My suite was located on the 6th and top floor of the hotel.

Upon entering, I immediately noticed a strange, persistent smell. The entryway opened into a kitchenette and office area, which then led to a living room with a large sectional sofa, a coffee table, and a TV.

A partition separated the living room from the bedroom, but it didn’t have a door… So this “Presidential Suite” seemed more like a Junior Suite to me. If the living and sleeping areas can’t be properly separated, is it really a suite?

On the other side of the partition was another TV, a very comfortable king-size bed, and a noisy air conditioner—I should say, a diesel engine! I forgot to turn it off before sleeping and was woken up several times by its loud operation.

Adjacent to the bedroom was a well-appointed bathroom with a spacious vanity, a large shower, a sink, and a toilet.

So, as I said, not really a Presidential Suite—not even much of a suite at all! However, the modern décor, in line with the Sheraton brand’s new standards, was a positive.

Finally, the virtual tour:

Hotel facilities

The hotel is equipped with a fitness center and a pool, both located on the ground floor.

Gym

I didn’t get a chance to visit the fitness center during my stay. It has no windows but seems well-equipped and of reasonable size, given the number of rooms in the hotel.

Pool

The hotel pool looked quite inviting, but like the fitness center, I didn’t have time to use it. The pool features both indoor and outdoor areas that are connected. . Clever. I barely saw anyone using it during my stay.

Catering

The dining services are provided by a bar/restaurant located next to the lobby. The space is quite dreary.

Club Lounge

The property has a Club Lounge, also located on the ground floor, adjacent to the bar/restaurant.

The lounge is open from 5 AM to midnight but offers almost no dining options. Breakfast isn’t served in the Club Lounge, and in the evening, there was a sad offering of skewers with a sort of barbecue sauce and undercooked vegetables in a container. Truly shameful. They might as well close the Club Lounge entirely rather than offer such a poor selection!

Breakfast

Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 10 AM in buffet style.

The service, however, was very friendly, and the omelet I ordered was decent (though huge).

Service

The service at the hotel was simply nonexistent. They could easily change the sign to Courtyard or Residence Inn, and it would feel exactly the same.

Not at all what one expects from a full-service hotel.

Departure

The check-out process was extremely simple, completed through the Marriott app.

Bottom line

While being upgraded to the Presidential Suite is always appreciated, the rest of the experience was just pathetic. Despite the successful renovation, the service was utterly disgraceful.
