Restaurant Kaifo in Gothenburg : a good Asian bistronomic restaurant for a dinner with friends

Kaifo is a good Asian restaurant that I would describe as bistronomic, ideal for a dinner with friends.

For this dinner I didn’t bother to find a restaurant. Dining with a friend living in Gothenburg I let her choose a restaurant she wanted to discover. Finally in her proposals we agreed on Kaifo.

You will find all the articles about this trip in Malaysia at the bottom of the page.

Kaifo’s concept

Kaifo offers an Asian fusion cuisine that is more sophisticated than an ordinary Asian restaurant, which is why I call it bistronomic.

Kaifo’s setting

Being a bit preoccupied with my delayed luggage case on the flight from Frankfurt to Gothenburg I forgot to take pictures. Let’s say it’s warm but very dark.

The Menu

For inspiration we are half way between Asia (and particularly Japan) and Europe, a very good example of fusion cuisine.

The dinner

The way from the hotel to the restaurant is the occasion for me to relearn how to walk on the snow and to curse this delayed luggage as well as those who delayed it because my outfit is not really adapted.

I had originally booked at 8pm but my friend had a setback so we moved it to 9:30pm. I arrived right on time and before I was even seated I was told that I had to order immediately because the kitchens would be closing.

No worries but I’m still waiting for someone and then they take reservations until 10pm. Strange way to welcome people.

We will order quickly. The dishes on the menu are more for sharing so we will make a small selection that we will share.

With the discussion starting, the status of my luggage I keep checking, I have no memory of what we ordered. At a glance there are dumplings, maybe beef tataki, obviously cod, for dessert coconut crumble with coconut ice cream and pineapple cream. and maybe the yuzu sorbet.

It’s pretty good, it’s tasty, it’s a bit sophisticated, the presentation of the dishes is beautiful and in the end it was an excellent dinner. Not gourmet but sophisticated enough not to feel like you’re eating at the Japanese restaurant around the corner.

On the other hand it is not copious, you can order many dishes without fear of having to much. I think that even alone I would have eaten all the dishes and still had room to add some.

Pour ceux qui connaissent c’est en dessous de TO à Paris, mais le positionnement n’est pas le même. Here it’s more of a nice restaurant where you can share dishes with friends while the other one claims a more gastronomic positioning.

The service

Except for the arrival which was a bit rough the staff was efficient and pleasant.

The atmosphere

Very very quiet because we were practically the only table. I imagine it’s more lively and vibrant in normal times or if you go to eat there at normal hours.

Bottom line

I wasn’t really in the mood for this dinner and the discussion was quite interesting but I keep an excellent memory of this dinner. To try again in another context and rather with friends than solo I think.
