L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon is back in the British capital! Closed at the time of COVID, the restaurant formerly located in Soho is back, in the shell of the late chef’s gastronomic brasserie, formerly known as “Le comptoir”. Let’s take a look back at this excellent experience.
The concept
We won’t describe again the iconic chef’s Atelier concept: simple cuisine, served in small portions, a kitchen open to the dining room and red and black tones.
The setting
As I said before, the decor is centered around the red and black colors. However, the elegant counter decor has been retained, the banquettes re-dusted and some of the paintwork redone.
The whole effect is quite successful and gives a cosy feel that contrasts with the Atelier’s usual decor, which I now find dated with its shiny black coverings.
The menu
The menu is very classic, featuring Chef Robuchon’s signature dishes. Main courses are all served with the chef’s legendary butter purée.
The meal and the dishes
My wife and I will chose dishes from the à la carte menu for this dinner.
An amuse-bouche was served first: a yuzu gelee with anchovy cream, unfortunately a little too much.
For starters, I chose my favorite dish from the chef’s menu, langoustine en ravioles, which, as usual, was a knockout.
For the main course, I chose the fillet of beef served with a crispy gratin dauphinois, both of which were perfect.
My wife chose the sole meunière, a dish I already knew from my days at Le Comptoir, and which was also succulent, especially accompanied by Monsieur Robuchon’s purée.
For dessert, we shared the rhubarb, which was perfect.
The mignardises rounded off the meal with a decaffeinated espresso.
The service
The big difference with the previous concept, the Comptoir, is certainly the absolutely perfect service we enjoyed during this meal.
Our waitress adapted perfectly to our pace.
The atmosphere
Cosy but relaxed, just what you’d expect from a Atelier.
Bottom Line
An excellent experience, and very good value for money.
