Sheraton Stockholm: as bland as ever

So here I am in Stockholm for one night before leaving for Australia the next morning. For this stay I chose the Sheraton Stockholm more by reason than by desire.

You will find at the bottom of the page the list of articles related to this trip.

Booking

I booked the hotel a month and a half before my trip on the Marriott app for 175 euros a night in a standard room. Not so expensive after all for Sweden.

I must say that I was not more enthusiastic than that: we have already stayed several times at the Sheraton Stockholm and the least we can say is that it has never left us a lasting memory.

But here’s the thing: I’m only here for one night and, moreover, I have some difficulty walking so its location right next to the central station from where I will arrive and leave for the airport by Arlanda Express won my decision. Otherwise there are other hotels in Stockholm that I prefer.

The day before my arrival I will see in the application that my room has been upgraded to “superior room with view on high floor“. Stingy when there are still junior suites available..

Location of the hotel

As I said it is located less than 5 minutes walk from Stockholm Central Station (even with a limp). And that is its only value.

Arrival and Check-in

I arrived in the late morning after my flight from Munich. I leave the station and go to the hotel.

I had specified in the application during my online check-in an early arrival and it was taken into account: my room was already ready 4 hours before the official check-in time.

The reception is reminiscent of the old Sheraton or Hilton with a very “American” design from the 80’s: soulless and low ceiling.

The lobby is not much nicer.

The receptionist on the other hand is adorable. She follows the protocol of the loyalty program and thanks me for coming back to the hotel after having stayed there before. Good point: beyond the loyalty program they recognize customers who are loyal to the hotel in particular. However, she doesn’t know that I didn’t come back out of conviction.

Another positive point is that since they have my credit card number in the application I won’t need to give an imprint. I don’t understand why all hotels don’t do this.

Having gotten up very early in the morning I am in a hurry to get to my room.

By the way the elevator looks really old. Although the hotel has been renovated, the elevator dates back to the 1980s.

The room

It is a superior room on a high floor with a view. I already know it: I had exactly the same one a few meters away in February 2020 during my last stay when I went to Olivier’s wedding in Thailand.

The room is quite spacious with a real desk and a lounge area that even minimalist has the merit to exist.

The decoration is sober and of good taste even if it is difficult to guess if the room was the object of a renovation or a replastering to hide the misery.

The bathroom is large and functional.

IMG_0297

Well, Sheraton has changed its supplier for its toiletries

IMG_0298

Strong point of the room: its large balcony. Unfortunately in this month of September the Swedish climate already makes it difficult to use.

IMG_0299

However, I appreciate the view.

IMG_0300

I appreciate however the view on Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm.

What to say? A fairly spacious room but the renovation cannot hide the age of the hotel. A very comfortable bedding and a beautiful balcony despite the fact that it is no longer the season to enjoy it.

On the other hand, the air-conditioning is really noisy and what can we say about the ventilation of the bathroom which makes a real racket.

Bar and restaurant

I will not enjoy the hotel’s bar or restaurant, just the club lounge.

On my arrival nothing has changed compared to my previous stay: my nostrils are assailed by the smell of cooking.

The lounge is not very full unlike my past experiences but I think that’s because I arrived after the battle. The state of the buffet will confirm this to me.

IMG_0313

In terms of hot dishes there are satay skewers and jalapenos. On my arrival the dishes will be almost empty but the staff will refill them very quickly.

IMG_0315

Salad (singular), cheeses (plural), cake and fruit.

IMG_0312.HEIC

I was pleasantly surprised by the surprising choice of cheeses for a Scandinavian country.

There are also water fountains and soft drinks. Alcohol can be ordered from the staff.

IMG_0310

Result in my plate that I will fill several times.

IMG_0314

Well, it was actually pretty good for what it was and it did fill my stomach. I was no longer hungry when I left, so I didn’t have to find a restaurant in Stockholm.

Facilities

The hotel has a fairly large gym that I will not be using this time.

The staff and the service

My only interactions were with the receptionist and the waitress in the lounge. In both cases friendly and efficient.

I will add a very positive point. In the middle of the afternoon, someone knocked on my door, which surprised me a little. It’s room service. To thank me for coming back to the hotel I am offered a half bottle of champagne Cava and chocolates. Not much, but an attention that is very pleasant.

Check-out

I’ll check out on the mobile app and head to the station to catch my Arlanda Express to the airport. No need to go through the reception again, simple, fluid, efficient.

Bottom line

An uneventful stay in a property that struggles to inspire the slightest desire or emotion, one that no longer corresponds to the current renewal of the Sheraton brand.

Stingy application of the loyalty program but thanks for the Cava.

In the end a hotel that has the merit to exist because of its location and this is the only reason that will push me to return.
