Thai Royal Silk Lounge – Bangkok Terminal E: royally mediocre

Arriving in Bangkok from Stockholm I have a short two-hour connection before boarding the plane to Sydney, my final destination. The airport of Suvarnabhumi being rather quiet at this early hour and the security controls to be passed again being more fluid I will have time to go to the Thai Royal Silk lounge of gates E.

You will find a list of all the articles related to this trip at the bottom of the page.

Location of the lounge

Thai being “at home” in Suvarnabhumi the airline has several lounges and the airport being composed of a single terminal you can in fact go to the one that suits you best. For my part my flight to Sydney leaving from gate E I will use the Royal Silk lounge located nearby.

There is a Royal Orchid lounge across the street but it will be closed (still the aftermath of COVID?) during my visit, with the Royal Silk getting all the eligible customers.

If you are departing from thegates E this lounge is a maximum 5 minute walk from your gate.

Access to the lounge

Open to all passengers traveling on Thai in business class, on any Star Alliance airline in business class, THAI Royal Orchid Gold and Platinum members or Star Alliance Gold status holders traveling on a Star Alliance operated flight.

Reception

I go to the reception with my boarding pass for my flight to Sydney. Traveling in business class and being Star Alliance Gold, I have two reasons for eligibility.

The staff glanced at my card and pointed to the lounge with a big smile, welcoming me.

Lounge design

The lounge is all in one piece with either lounge chairs or small tables for dining.

It is distressingly sad and not especially beautiful.

Catering

It’s breakfast time and not the time when the lounges offer their best catering.

There is the usual hot and cold drink station.

A rather small cold offer.

A rather limited hot offer with eggs, sausages and soups.

If you want to drink to forget this mediocre experience, it is possible, but only if you are not too demanding on the variety.

As far as I’m concerned, I just got off a 12-hour flight and I’m getting ready to embark on a 10-hour flight with two beautiful services served on board, so I’ll settle for a tea without honoring the buffet.

Facilities and services

The lounge offers showers.

Bottom line

A more than mediocre lounge when you consider that it welcomes business class and elite passengers of Thai and possibly other Star Alliance airlines departing for a long haul flight in the main hub of the Thai airline.

Fortunately these passengers have many other choices and I understand why they prefer other lounges.

Maybe the early hour didn’t help, so I’ll give this lounge a second chance on my return flight, not without visiting its “competitors” in order to deliver a little benchmark.
