After a long wait in Miami, it was finally time to board for Costa Rica.
Boarding
I arrived at the gate less than five minutes before the scheduled start of boarding, and the process began on time with the boarding of Business passengers, which included me.
Cabin and welcome
The welcome was courteous as I stepped into this classic American Airlines Domestic First cabin. On flights to Latin America, however, it is marketed as Business Class.
The cabin is configured 2-2 with comfortable recliner seats.
Despite the international nature of the flight, the welcome drink came in the form of a glass of water handed out directly, without even a tray. Quite staggering.
A hot oshibori was then served.
We pushed back from the gate around ten minutes ahead of schedule.
Service and catering
The service began with the meal orders being taken. Unfortunately, my pre-ordered burgers had somehow been lost along the way, and I ordered a glass of red wine .
Warm nuts were then distributed, and they were excellent, followed by the drink I had ordered.
The red wine was poured very generously.
The tray arrived shortly afterward, with a neat presentation.
The starter was excellent, with marinated artichokes.
For the main course, the short rib was also delicious, as was the mac and cheese.
Finally, for dessert, the lemon cheesecake was absolutely to die for.
I was offered a refill of red wine when I got up to use the lavatory, but I declined.
Arrival and disembarkation
We reached the gate nearly 30 minutes ahead of schedule, but immigration took almost an hour, which was hellish.
Bottom line
A disappointing flight from a service standpoint, with only the catering saving the day.
