Salón Santamaría, San José, Costa Rica: Very average

After three very intense days, it was time to board my flight back to Boston.

Check-in and ground experience

I completed the online check-in formalities through the American Airlines app and promptly retrieved my Passbook and PDF boarding passes.

I arrived at the airport a little over two hours before my flight’s scheduled departure time.

Check-in was almost deserted, and I collected my paper boarding passes after a physical check of my passport and permanent resident card.

Immigration was immediate, as was security, and I was airside in less than two minutes.

Location and Welcome

I arrived airside shortly after 4:05 a.m., and since the lounge only opened at 4:30 a.m., I waited with an excellent latte made from Costa Rican coffee before it opened.

It is accessible either by elevator or by stairs.

A line had formed, and my eligibility was checked through Priority Pass.

Design

The lounge has a rather basic design, with lounging and dining areas that feel a little dated, though they are clean. In that respect, this lounge is certainly not about to make the cover of any interior design magazine.

Food & Beverage Offering

At the time of my visit, and since the lounge had just opened, the food offering was extremely sparse, as breakfast had not yet been set up.

I had a mint tea while waiting for my flight to board.

Bottom line

A not unpleasant wait, but a truly underwhelming lounge.
