AC Hotel San Jose, Costa Rica: Successful design, decent service, and mediocre catering

For my final night in Costa Rica on this trip, I chose to stay at this hotel in the capital, located just a few minutes by car from the international airport, as I had a very early flight the next morning. Or so I thought…

Booking

I booked this hotel around two weeks before my arrival… Or rather, I thought it was this hotel, but not at all… I eventually realized that I had actually booked the wrong property, as there is also another AC Hotel on the other side of the city.

I quickly cancelled that mistaken reservation and booked the correct hotel on the very day of my arrival.

Arrival

I arrived by Uber from my client site, located less than five minutes away by car.

I completed the check-in formalities immediately. Despite my very last-minute booking, I was upgraded to a corner room offering extra space and a more open view.

Room

My room was located on the 4th and top floor of the property, at the very end of the corridor.

The entrance opens onto a hallway, which leads on the left to the bathroom. It features a walk-in shower, a washbasin, and toilet. The toiletries are of good quality.

On the other side, there is an open wardrobe area with an espresso machine similar to the one at the Marriott where I stayed on the previous nights, as well as a safe.

Further along is a television followed by a large desk. Opposite that are a king-size bed with two bedside tables, next to a leather sofa.

The view is fairly open, although the neighborhood itself is not especially inspiring.

Finally, the virtual tour:

Hotel Amenities

The hotel features a fitness center and an outdoor pool, both located on the 4th and top floor of the property.

Fitness Center

The fitness center is a good size and well equipped. Unfortunately, I did not make use of it this time.

Pool

The pool is rather small, but given the weather, I did not use it either.

Food & Beverage

I had dinner at the hotel restaurant on the evening of my stay.

The charcuterie board was generous but lacking in quality.

The fish was overcooked.

Service

The service was good, but clearly not on the same level as at the Marriott.

Departure

Check-out was straightforward, as it was completed through the Marriott Bonvoy app.

Bottom line

A mixed stay overall. I would not return.
