The first flight segment of this journey to Washington, DC, started with a flight from Boston to Newark.
Boarding
I left the lounge less than 10 minutes before the scheduled boarding time.
The gate was quite far, and I received a text alert for boarding as I was approaching.
Boarding began two minutes ahead of schedule with pre-boarding for numerous passenger groups.
Then it was my turn, and I boarded without issue.
Cabin and welcome
The gate agents were polite, and I stepped into the Domestic First cabin on United’s 737 MAX 9, which is configured with five rows of 2-2 recliner seats.
The legroom seemed slightly tighter compared to American Airlines.
As boarding continued, the flight attendant in charge of the cabin came around with a tray of pre-departure beverages, and I chose a glass of orange juice.
Although boarding was completed before the scheduled departure time, it took forever to get moving, and we pushed back nearly 15 minutes after the scheduled departure.
Service and catering
Service began after the seatbelt sign was turned off.
I ordered a sweetened latte, which was quickly delivered, though it lacked a stirrer and had very little milk—leaving me with a rather bitter taste given the quality of American coffee.
No snacks were offered.
The remainder of the flight was uneventful, but no refills were provided.
Arrival and disembarkation
Despite things going relatively smoothly, we landed just on time, though the generously padded schedule played a part. Taxiing took ages at Newark
, and in the end, we arrived 15 minutes late. The jet bridge was slow to dock, adding another 5 minutes to the delay.
Bottom line
An average flight with uninspired service and, true to United’s style, a late arrival.
