American Express Centurion Lounge, Washington Reagan: Excellent in Every Way

After a brief stay in the U.S. capital, I’m heading home to Boston with United.

For the first leg of my journey, I made a stop at the American Express Centurion Lounge.

Check-in and ground experience

I checked in for my return trip on United 24 hours before my flight, downloading my boarding passes in Passbook and PDF formats.

On the evening before departure, I received a text from United notifying me of a 40-minute delay due to the late arrival of the inbound flight, which required adjustment to comply with crew rest regulations.

I left the Ritz-Carlton a little over two hours before the rescheduled departure and arrived at the terminal about 10 minutes later.

Early in the morning, the security checkpoint was nearly empty, and I was airside in less than 5 minutes.

Location and welcome

The lounge is located right next to the security exit, facing the corridor that leads to Concourse B, where my flight departs today.

The welcome was polite but without a smile—granted, it was early, but it’s early for everyone, and a smile costs nothing.

Lounge design

The lounge design is impressive and consistent with other Amex lounges, featuring blue, gray, and camel tones.

There are plenty of relaxation areas, along with a dining area near the buffet.

Various meeting rooms and phone booths are available,

and there’s a dedicated area for Centurion cardholders.

Catering

During my early morning visit, the breakfast selection was available.

The offering was decent, though nothing extraordinary; I limited myself to scrambled eggs and a sausage.

Bottom line

A pleasant stay in a lounge that can turn into a zoo during peak hours.
