For my final night in Michigan during this business trip, I decided to stay at the Westin located within one of Detroit Airport’s terminals—a hotel I’ve always wanted to try.
Booking
I made the reservation through the Marriott Bonvoy app using my company’s corporate code. I booked it about two weeks before my arrival. Even though I was flying out of a different terminal the following day, I’ve always wanted to experience this hotel since I started traveling to Detroit for business.
Arrival
I completed the check-in process two days before my arrival, at which point I noticed I had been upgraded to a Deluxe room—a room with a runway view.
All the rooms are identical, except for two suites which were booked at the time of my reservation. Ultimately, in an airport hotel, a great view is what truly matters!
On the day of my arrival, I headed straight to my room as I had already received my digital room key.
Room
My room was located on the seventh floor of the hotel, far enough from the elevators to avoid noise.
The entrance leads into a hallway with a small table on the left for personal items and the bathroom on the right.
The bathroom was fairly standard, with a large vanity providing enough space and rare amenities like a dental kit. However, the shower pressure was too weak, not quite up to the brand’s usual standards.
Next came the main part of the room, featuring an extremely comfortable large king-size bed flanked by two nightstands, a TV, and a desk.
Near the window, there was a comfortable sofa and a coffee table. The view of Detroit Airport’s McNamara Terminal and the runways was magnificent.
Finally, the virtual tour:
Hotel facilities
The hotel is equipped with a fitness center and a pool, both located on the second floor.
Gym
I used the fitness center on the day of my arrival to complete my daily exercises. It’s a decent size, though the equipment is slightly dated. Nevertheless, I had no issues getting my workout done.
Towels and cold oshibori are provided, stored in a fridge. The view isn’t anything special since it faces the terminal from the second floor.
Pool
The pool is adjacent to the fitness center. Although it’s small, I had it to myself for a few short laps.
Unfortunately, the jacuzzi was out of service. It was quite enjoyable to swim with such a fantastic view of the airport traffic.
Catering
The hotel has a single dining option located in the hotel’s large atrium, which most rooms overlook.
On the right is the bar, and on the left, a restaurant, though you can order from either side.
Dinner Service – Reflections Lounge
I decided to dine at the hotel bar during my stay. To my surprise, it was almost full when I arrived.
I found a high-top table and had a quick meal—pepperoni pizza and a Macallan 12-year. The service was excellent and attentive, though the pizza was far too large for me.
Breakfast Service – Reflections
On the morning of my departure, with my flight canceled, I had time to enjoy breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant.
Beforehand, I stopped by the front desk to pick up my voucher for breakfast, which I hadn’t collected the night before due to checking in online. The voucher was quickly handed over with a smile, and I made my way to the restaurant for breakfast.
There’s no buffet here; everything is à la carte. With the voucher, I could order any dish or a continental breakfast, which I opted for.
Everything was very good, except for the fruit, which wasn’t quite ripe. Again, the service was outstanding, and I left a generous tip, even though I had used the voucher.
Service
I was extremely impressed by the high level of service at this hotel, which felt completely out of step with the decline in U.S. service standards I’ve seen in recent years.
The entire staff was motivated and smiling—it was refreshing to see!
Departure
The check-out process was effortless, as I used the mobile check-out feature in the Marriott app.
I received my final bill a few hours after my departure.
Bottom line
An excellent stay at this hotel—I’ll definitely be back!
