Hell’s Kitchen Miami: Could Do Better!

During our stay in Miami, we decided to have dinner one evening downtown at one of the restaurants owned by British chef Gordon Ramsay.

The concept

This is a restaurant themed after the Hell’s Kitchen TV show, which has been airing in the United States since 2005 and is essentially a cooking competition—similar to Top Chef in France, for instance.

The setting

The ambiance is well-executed and carefully designed, reflecting the color scheme and artistic direction of the TV show.

At the entrance, there is a wall featuring all the winners of the show, and Gordon Ramsay is omnipresent throughout the restaurant via screens or photographs.

The menu

The menu is fairly short and includes British chef classics, as well as signature dishes from the TV show.

The meal and the dishes

To accompany my meal, I ordered a glass of merlot, which was excellent.

My wife ordered the corn soup as a starter, which was excellent, just like the one she had ordered previously in Boston.

For the main course, I had the chicken scallopini, which were rather average, with a sauce that had a burnt garlic taste. The side dish was also fairly mediocre.

My wife’s lobster risotto was a bit better, but it wasn’t as creamy and well-bound as it should be.

For dessert, we opted for the chef’s classic Sticky Toffee Pudding, which, as always, was excellent.

The service

The service was very good, friendly and warm without being intrusive.

In this restaurant, like in many places in Miami, the service charge is automatically included in the bill at a fixed rate of 20%. Of course, you can adjust the percentage, but it removes the need to think about tipping. This did not affect the quality of the service in any way.

The atmosphere

The background music was a bit too loud in this restaurant, making the overall ambiance rather overwhelming, even though the patrons weren’t speaking particularly loudly.

Bottom line

An acceptable experience, though far from our best meals at Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants.
