Review : Air China First Class Lounge (International), Beijing

A few days after discovering Air China’s Business class lounge while we were in transit to Seoul, here is the First lounge on our return flight to Europe on Lufthansa.

This is the lounge in the international area of the terminal, and there is of course another one in the domestic zone.

Location of the lounge

The lounge is located on the mezzanine above the duty free area of Terminal 3. It is immediately after the security checkpoint, so it is easy to get to and even the farthest gates are within easy reach.

It is located just opposite the business lounge.

The escalator that leads to the mezzanine.

From there you have a beautiful view of the terminal and the duty free.

Who has access to the lounge

The lounge accommodates first class customers of all Star Alliance airlines. It is also available to Priority Pass members (just like the business lounge).

Lounge layout

If you have already read our review of the business lounge you will not be surprised: the two lounges are identical in every way!

It is a very large place with widely spaced seats. The client density is very low.

Whether you want to relax, chat or eat, there are plenty of space and seating configurations available to suit everyone.

There is even a large TV area apart.

It’s very bright and you feel at ease. On the other hand it’s a bit rough in terms of decoration and furniture for a lounge that is supposed to be very premium.

Food

The lounge has several buffets.

First of all light/snack.

Very average, even a bit of a mess.

Soft drinks, water, fruit juices…alongside dairy products!

And of course tea and coffee…

It is also possible to have espressos but you have to ask for them at the bar…where you can also find the alcohol. But it remains very light all the same.

Elsewhere you can find a hot offer and more substantial things.

First in the western fashion…

There is some variety but little effort and it is not very appetizing.

There is also an “Asian” buffet.

It gives already a little more desire but finally little variety except Dumplings.

Fortunately that a flight in first class waited for us, what made that we had to leave anyway a lot of place in our stomachs but the catering offer of this first class lounge is not at all up to par either regarding the variety or the quality.

This would be acceptable for a medium-haul business lounge, borderline for a long-haul business lounge, but it is totally irrelevant for a First classs lounge, which is just a copy of the opposite business class lounge. Cheap from design to buffet!

The service

For the few times that we had to interact with the staff I would say: friendliness and efficiency. In the dining room the staff “does the job” with efficiency and discretion. As for the welcome, it was very cordial and with the detail that changes everything: when we left the lounge to reach the boarding gate, a member of the staff ran after us. He asks us “is it for the flight to Munich?”. The answer is yes. And then he told us “come back to the lounge they just announced it was late”. We complain enough about the airlines that do not inform the passengers and make them wait at the gate instead of letting them enjoy the lounge so we appreciate it.

Bottom line

The only difference between this lounge and the business lounge opposite it is its attendance: there are far fewer people for the same space, so it is more comfortable.

For the rest we have a service that would be quite average but vaguely acceptable for a business lounge, so quite below the standards and expectations for a First lounge.
