Nordport Plaza Hamburg, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel – A truly #avgeek property

As part of a friendly visit to Hamburg and a late arrival by plane, I stayed at the Nordport Plaza, located near the airport and recently opened in the German city. A look back on a very pleasant stay.

Booking

I had originally booked at Le Meridien Hamburg, then when faced with the rather high price, I changed my reservation to the Renaissance, as the SPG and Marriott nights were combined in August 2018.

But a few days before my stay, a quick check on the SPG app brings to my attention this new hotel that just opened near the airport. It’s ideal: the next night will be spent with my friends, who live on the other side of the airport.

The price is very low which does not spoil anything: the night is 84€ all included with maximum flexibility (essential in times of Air France strike). Note that the room categories are indicated as airline classes.

Before I arrive, I see a nice upgrade in suitein the SPG app!

Arrival

When my plane arrives at the gate from Paris, I call the property so that the shuttle can pick me up. This is confirmed immediately and the meeting point is indicated to me.

When I leave the baggage claim area, I wait less than 3 minutes for the shuttle. It is a very comfortable Mercedes van parked not far from there, not the kind of shuttle you find in American airports… I wait for two other passengers and we leave for the hotel for a trip of about 5 minutes. The service is of course free.

As soon as I arrived at the hotel, I did the check-in formalities. We see immediately that the staff is young, the hotel has just opened. It was still professional, but his colleague came to help him when he realized that I was a Platinum member: everyone was at attention, and I was told that I had been ” of course ” upgraded, and they offered to escort me to my room.

Excellent servicefor an airport hotel.

Note that the entire lobby is very elegantly decorated, and that many elements of decoration recall the air vocabulary.

Room

The suite assigned was located on the second floor of the property at  Terminal 2, which is actuallya second building of the same hotel, and I am escorted by the receptionist who shows me the suite.

L’entrée débouche sur l‘espace salon, assez spacieux. It consists of a well-equipped kitchenette, a bar table and a sofa.

A welcome giftwas left for me, as well as a handwritten welcome note from the hotel manager.

The bathroom is located to the right of the entrance. It is composed of a spacious shower (but with a photo of a blonde woman rather incongruous), toilets and a sink.

The night space is equipped with a super-king bed, and a closet hidden in the wall by a rather ingenious system.

Note also that theTV is placed on a swivel unit that allows it to be used both in the lounge and in the bed.

To finish, a visit in video:

Hotel facilities

Due to the short time I was there, I wasn’t able to take advantage of the hotel’s facilities, but according to the website, it is equipped with a24-hour fitness room and a sauna.

Restaurants

I could only enjoy the breakfast service. It is possible to order breakfast in advance to avoid waiting, and even have it delivered to your room for an additional 5€ per person.

As in a plane, there is no buffet and the meal is brought on a tray. The result is quite disappointing, the scrambled eggs were bland and the cheese of rather average quality. The idea is there, but the execution is not.

Departure

The departure formalities were quite simple. I had to have the bill corrected to remove the wrongly charged breakfasts, but it was very quick. Once again, a lot of hesitations but a real will to satisfy the customer.

Bottom line

Honestly, the best hotel airport we have ever stayed at on TravelGuys. However, it lacks the direct connection to the terminal like our favorite, the Sheraton Paris Charles-de-Gaulle. And the catering leaves something to be desired, but let’s bet that it’s only a small adjustment due to its youth!
