Like all Moxy hotels, the Moxy Bordeaux is a pleasant, affordable lifestyle hotel that shows its limitations if you stay too long. What’s more, the service left a lot to be desired during this stay.
Not much choice at Marriott in Bordeaux: I had the choice between staying at the Renaissance Bordeaux or the neighboring Moxy. Given the length of my stay, the Moxy was the obvious choice because of its rates. It’s a hotel I’d stayed at before, and remembered with fondness.

Booking
I booked a standard room 3 weeks before my arrival for 85 euros per night.
The day before my arrival I checked the Marriott app for hotel inventory to see if there were any upgrade possibilities but without much hope. Indeed, the hotel will be full.
There are two ways to make sure you don’t get upgraded: take a long stay or come during a busy period. I stayed for more than a week and then there was the Easter weekend, so I ticked all the wrong boxes.
Arrival at the hotel and check-in
I arrive at the hotel by Uber from the very good Sheraton Bordeaux Airport. The hotel is located in the Bassin à flot district, close to the Cité du Vin and next to the Renaissance. A 10-minute streetcar ride will take you to the city center.
I enter the lobby, a very pleasant living space, as is always the case in Moxy hotels.
I head for reception, where I’m greeted with a smile by a young attendant (at Moxy, reception and bar are run by the same people in the same place).
The formalities are completed quickly and efficiently and I get the key to my room.
One of the few negative points during my previous stay was the absence of a gym. But this time I noticed that the application mentioned the possibility of using the Renaissance one, which makes sense because it’s the same property.
I asked about the availability of a gym and was told there was none. I play the ingenue and suggest that I could use the one at the Renaissance…
“We did at one time, but it’s no longer possible”.
“Ah…”
“But we have a partnership with the one at the Radisson Blu, 10 minutes from here”.
“Under what conditions?”
“Uh, I don’t know.”
I might as well tell you that I find the situation absurd and the response far from satisfactory. I can understand that this is too many people for the room’s capacity, but they could maintain this advantage for Platinum members and above, for example.
And at least remove this misleading statement from their site.
So I head for my room…a chance to rediscover some of the markers of Moxy culture…
Book exchange…
The photobox…
The events…
The room
Pure Moxy: simple, clean, pretty.
It’s a reasonable size, it’s comfortable, the bedding is very decent.
The bathroom is small, but pretty and functional, and that’s the main thing.
There are absolutely no surprises in this room: it has all the qualities of a Moxy…as well as its shortcomings.
The desk or what serves as a desk (a tiny board with a low, uncomfortable wooden stool). Acceptable for checking email and getting a bit of work done, but hellish for full days of remote work, as I had to do.
So of course I could use the coworking space in the lobby, but that doesn’t meet my requirements at all in terms of confidentiality for calls and meetings.
It’s a real shame, because this is precisely the type of hotel that caters to a clientele of nomadic workers!
After a few minutes my doorbell will ring. It will be a member of staff who brings me the “VIP service”.
Sugar, cavities, calories….super treatment ;).
On the second day, when I got back to the hotel, I realized that my key wasn’t working. It must have demagnetized, no big deal. I’ll have it redone at the reception desk.
Same on the third day, then the fourth. In fact, it will stop working every day in the early afternoon.
I point out that there might be something wrong, to which I’m told that I need to be more careful about where I put the key so that it doesn’t demagnetize. I point out that it’s not demagnetized because it unlocks the elevator! I’m told again that I have to be careful. It’s a real dialogue of the deaf, and in the end I feel it’s my fault.
It wasn’t until the 7th day that someone a little smarter than the rest decided to send the technical team to check the lock. The problem was solved…the day before my departure.
But I was really exasperated by the attitude of the staff, who did nothing for a week to solve the problem, just blaming me and not being surprised that the card still worked in the elevator.
One day the cleaning lady will come by while I’m working and put up the do-not-disturb sign. I left my room at 1 p.m. with the sign removed, and when I returned at 6 p.m. the cleaning hadn’t been done. It won’t be done this day.
Another day she’ll remove a half-full bottle of water…
Facilities
The hotel has no facilities.
Bar and restaurant
I won’t be trying out the snack service at the bar, but I’ll be having a beer there one evening. Very friendly and nice
The staff
Young and dynamic, pleasant as is the norm at Moxy. But youth has its downside: a little levity and lack of professionalism if there’s no one to supervise and mentor.
A typical example is the story of my key, which I had redone every day for a week, and the staff’s indifferent attitude to the matter. And the fact that I was once reproached for it really stuck in my craw.
Check-out
On the morning of my departure, I had to try several times to get the mobile check-out to work, but I was finally able to leave without having to go through reception again.
Bottom line
A pleasant stay but if the Moxy concept is pleasant and very nice for a weekend, it is a little less suitable for a long stay especially if you have to work. It’s a shame, because the price is just right for this type of stay.
On the other hand, the story of the gym (especially for a long stay) and that of the key will largely tarnish this stay, because in the end all that remains in my memory is that and a rather uncomfortable room when I had to work.
Next time I’ll think twice before booking again at the Moxy Bordeaux if I have to stay more than one or two nights.
