The pandemic offers excellent opportunities for airlines to innovate, for better or for worse. While some took advantage of the situation to offer an unjustified deterioration in service “under the pretext of COVID”, others took the opportunity to offer their customers a real plus.
Such is the case with Qatar Airways, which has never ceased to surprise us during this crisis.
The Gulf airline has announced that it will be the first to offer a totally contactless in-flight entertainment (IFE) system!
Controlling an IFE with your own electronic devices
When we read this announcement, we were very curious to know how we were going to be able to control the way in which we would consume the media and other services provided by the contactless IFE. By eye?
In fact, it will be possible to pair personal devices (smartphones, tablets…) with the in-flight entertainment system, so that the latter can be piloted with the former.
This will be done simply by scanning a QR Code, and will work thanks to the “Zero Touch” technology made possible by the AVANT IFE system from Thalès.
Contactless…with contact
In the end, the promise is a little misleading: you exchange contact with the aircraft’s screens for contact with your own, and there’s nothing to tell us that passengers’ devices will be any cleaner than those in the cabin!
But at least this will give passengers the illusion that they are in control of their own health safety, and that they’ll be the only ones to blame in the event of problems.
The system will be available on all Qatar A350s. The airline has also announced that it will be possible to pair one’s Bluetooth headsets with the aircraft’s IFE on its Boeing 787-9s.
