Review: Lufthansa First Class, Frankfurt-Singapore on A380

Last step of my trip to Singapore, the main course, a flight in A380 in First on Lufthansa.

Check-in and ground course in Frankfurt

Being checked-in since the departure from Paris nothing to report on this point. As for the ground journey, as I mentioned here, access to the First Class Terminal, while possible for connecting passengers, is not part of their normal “journey”. So I had to get out of the terminal and walk to the terminal dedicated to First class passengers departing from Frankfurt. Not super optimal.

The First Class Terminal at Frankfurt Airport

Other than that, the First Class Terminal experience is as enjoyable as ever.

After enjoying the place for a few hours it was time to board, but not without being offered a duck, a gift given to all passengers passing through the terminal with new models frequently put into circulation, some of which are collectors and very sought after.

Boarding in Frankfurt

Departure from the First Calss terminal is always with the Lufthansa Limousine Service. During my previous visit I had the chance to have the transfer in Porsche Cayenne. This time there were too many of us between the First class passengers and the HON Circle loyalty program members who have access to the terminal regardless of their class of travel. We will be accompanied to the plane in van.

IMG_1539

Very comfortable though.

Once at the foot of the plane, we will take the stairs of the jetway to reach the cabin.

The First Class cabin of the Lufthansa A380

And here is the First Class cabin of this A380.

IMG_1567

There is a real feeling of space even if in terms of isolation and privacy we are far from the standards of the moment among competitors where the closed suite has become the norm.

A push of a button deploys a bulkhead that rises to mid-height during flight. It’s not a panacea but it allows to have a minimum of privacy during the flight.

IMG_1619

The legroom is really important. Here again, a press of a button allows you to slide the otoman to bring it closer so you can put your feet on it.

IMG_1572

As always the cabin is decorated with fresh roses.

IMG_1590

A good point for the adjustments of the seat which are simple to understand contrary to others which propose a really complicated system.

IMG_1587

The remote control shows that we are dealing with old generation devices…

IMG_1588

Without being huge the screen is of good size but as more and more often I will not use it, preferring to watch my own selection of movies and series on my iPad.

IMG_1589

Every First Class passenger on Lufthansa A380s has a good-sized, code-lockable checkroom in which to store not only their belongings but also suitcases and travel bags.

IMG_1611

Hardly embarked I am brought a glass of champagne, then a second one…

IMG_1548

Soon after a hot oshibori will follow.

IMG_1565

Then the amenity kit. It is very basic in its content, not particularly premium, and its packaging is not of the best taste, not to mention the fact that it is not easy to fit in my bag afterwards.

I will also be given a pair of pajamas but we’ll talk about that later ….

So much for this overview, we are now ready to take off and on time.

The Lufthansa First Class flight and service

Takeoff without any problem and, night flight, no image or video worthy of this name to propose you. Shortly afterwards the purser will come and introduce herself to me.

It’s time for me to dive into the menu.

And in the wine list…

Contrary to our last flight from Beijing to Munich no on-demand snack menu during the flight. I didn’t get one either on my Frankfurt-Hong Kong or my Hong Kong-Munich, which makes me think that Lufthansa only offers this service on day flights. Understandable but a bit of a shame when Singapore Airlines or Garuda for example offer it and not only in First.

Small disappointment also on the champagne menu: if I find the Laurent Perrier cuvée grand siècle that I like a lot, the Cuvée Alexandra rosé 2004 is now missing.

The service begins. As is the tradition at Lufthansa, we start with caviar served by the ladle.

IMG_1593

If the quality and quantity are there, the presentation leaves a little to be desired.

Then the starters. On Lufthansa we have the choice between several starters but unless otherwise ordered by the customer they are all served!

IMG_1594

The tasting begins…

IMG_1595

The meat is very tender and the mixture with the fruit is very tasty…for those who like sweet and sour.

IMG_1597

Fresh shrimp and very tasty and light accompaniment.

IMG_1596

I was a little skeptical about candied endives and wasn’t expecting much from this dish. Wrong: with its lemongrass yoghurt it gives a surprisingly light, fresh and very tasty dish. Definitely the best of the three starters.

For the dish I chose the roasted goose with its red cabbage compote.

IMG_1599

Well presented, copious and good even if in places the meat was a little dry. The choice was delicious.

However, at the end I start to find all this heavy but without it being due to this particular meal in my opinion.

After having eaten on the Paris-Munich, Munich-Frankfurt flights, in the First Class Lounge in Munich and in the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt my stomach can’t take it anymore! Especially since the meals on Lufthansa are generally very copious.

For dessert I would take the one that seems the lightest: yogurt with lime and passion fruit!

IMG_1601

Promise kept, it’s light and it slides on its own.

A mint tea to finish the meal.

IMG_1607

I’m getting tired and I’m in a hurry to go to bed. I head for the toilets which are used as a “changing room” while the crew makes up my bed.

The first class bathroom at the front of the A380 is really spacious and it’s nice to change.

IMG_1613

To my memory, Lufthansa is the only airline to have installed urinals in its toilets!

IMG_1614

I like the comfort and sobriety of pajamas but since my last trip the navy blue has been abandoned in favor of a brown that I find less tasteful.

IMG_1616

When I get out my bed is made up and I can go to sleep.

IMG_1618

I fall asleep quickly. The flight attendant asked me if I wanted to be awake for breakfast or extend my night and I chose the first option.

The bedding is nice and the bed is really long, I’m not likely to touch the end of it.

After a good night I wake up and choose to have breakfast with scrambled eggs with bacon.

IMG_1627

The eggs are delicious, the bacon crispy to perfection. On the other hand, the hot croissant is a bit chewing gum.

I then go to change and at the exit of the toilets my seat found its “day” configuration.

IMG_1634

The Lufthansa crew

As usual a very friendly and professional crew in First on Lufthansa. They were very attentive during the whole flight and tried to anticipate all my needs. Every time I pressed the button to ask for water during the night someone arrived almost immediately. This may seem obvious, but it is not obvious to everyone.

In short, we can see that they are happy to be there and really want to take care of the customer, this is a pleasure and is felt as a customer.

Arrival and disembarkation in Singapore

When we get off the plane a “welcome committee” is waiting for the First Class customers. They ask us if we know the airport and if we want to be accompanied to the immigration. All the passengers will politely decline: a chaperone would make us lose time especially since, unlike Air France, the accompaniment is done on foot and not by buggy.

Not many people at immigration in Changi today.

IMG_1639

The person who checks that I have filled out the form correctly before directing me to a counter even speaks to me in French.

The immigration will take me only two minutes and when I arrive at the baggage carousel I see with pleasure that the bags of the first class passengers are already there and waiting for us while those of the other passengers have not yet arrived on the conveyor belt (which does not run yet by the way).

IMG_1640

Bottom line

Another excellent flight in First Class on Lufthansa even if I find it a little less good than the previous ones without really being able to say why? The length of the routing with two connections? The accumulation of meals? I think that’s more to do with that than with the service itself, which was very good.

Only one regret: I hope that Lufthansa will replace its First cabin to finally offer more private spaces and regret that there is not a real reception service on arrival.

For the record, my routing :
