Moxy Lisbon City: beautiful room with a view

For this umpteenth stay at the Moxy Lisbon City, I was finally able to take advantage of an upgrade to a room I’d been eyeing all along. For the rest, the service remains in line with what we’ve come to expect from the brand: solid and without fuss.

For this short stay, the choice of hotel was quickly made, given the prices now charged in the Portuguese capital: the Moxy Lisbon City is excellent value for money, which more than makes up for the fact that it’s a little out of the way.

You’ll find a summary of the articles about this trip to Lisbon at the bottom of the page.

Booking

A few weeks before my stay, I booked a standard “Moxy” room at 173 euros per night. Expensive for a Moxy? Yes, but when I see that an Autograph Collection is priced at 900 euros and a Design Hotel at 500, I have confirmation that the Portuguese hotel industry is walking on its head.

I’ve also noticed that after leaving it for a few years, the Altis Belem is back in the Marriott inventory at 350 euros, which seems more justified to me, even if it’s still expensive.

Some time before my stay, I enter into the application an upgrade to a room on a high floor and then, the day before, to a Grammy room, the hotel’s highest category.

Location

This is surely the only negative aspect of this hotel: its off-center location at the very top of Avenida da Libertade. To get to the city, you’ll have to walk a good half-hour or take the metro. I don’t see this as a problem when you consider the rates charged elsewhere.

Arrival at the hotel and check-in

I arrive from the airport around noon under a beautiful spring sun.

I make my way to the reception area, which sits with the bar in the middle of the living space that serves as the lobby.

A rather cold welcome and my room isn’t ready yet. What’s the point of asking us to specify our arrival time? So I’m asked to come back at 3pm, but they’ll send me a message if my room is ready earlier.

So I drop my suitcase and head off for a stroll around town.

There’s no need to repeat the presentation of the hotel and lobby, which I’ve already shown you several times.

After two hours of walking, I start to get bored and return to the hotel around 2pm. I tried my luck at reception and was told that my room was ready. But the message never came.

The person at reception isn’t the same, and here I’m treated to the whole loyalty program protocol and a much warmer welcome. On the other hand, it will be infinitely slow.

They confirmed my upgrade to the Grammy room, which was a pleasant surprise. Indeed, at Moxy there are very few room categories, which generally makes upgrades unattractive, but this Moxy has a few truly superior rooms to which I’ve never had access in the past because they were always reserved. This time luck seems to be on my side.

I’m going to take possession of my room right now.

The Grammy Room at the Moxy Lisbon City

I enter my room, which is much larger than the standard one.

There’s a bed and a sofa that converts into a second bed.

The bed is normally comfortable, but a little soft for me, and the decoration, as always at Moxy, simple and no-frills.

The bathroom has a shower and is small but pretty and functional.

But the real attraction of this room is its terrace, which is why I’m surprised it hasn’t been booked at this time of year.

I might as well tell you that I’ll be spending most of my time there reading (my iPhone will also be getting hot, and I’ll have to put it back inside to get it back to a temperature where it can work).

The only real drawback: no desk or work space. I know it’s a “leisure” hotel, but given that the lower-category rooms have a simulated desk in the form of a tablet (not great, but better than nothing), I was expecting better in this respect.

But for two nights and knowing that I had nothing urgent to process on my computer, it was fine.

We end with the video visit.

Bar and restaurant

The hotel has a bar that also offers a snack bar. I’ll just have an aperitif there in the late afternoon on the two evenings of my stay, and refer you to my previous articles on this hotel for more details.

Facilities

The hotel doesn’t have a gym (common at Moxy) but a rooftop pool, which I discovered on this occasion. In fact, the hotel is quite new and I think the pool was only operational long after the property opened (and perhaps it’s not open in winter like the one at the neighboring Sheraton).

IMG_7363

Not huge, but always a nice place to relax after a day of sightseeing. And the view is totally unobstructed!

Staff and service

After an initial lukewarm reception, very friendly and pleasant as always here.

Check-out

I’ll check out on the mobile app and leave the hotel without having to go through reception again.

Bottom line

A service in line with the chain’s standards and promise, and a very pleasant room at a time when you want to spend some time in the sun and fresh air.
