Hotel Vík í Myrdal: fine services from this ex-Icelandair hotel

Second stop on this road trip through Iceland, with this hotel located in the small town of Vík, in the south of the island, after a 350 km drive from Reykjavik.

As a reminder, here is the itinerary followed:

Today’s itinerary

Booking

I booked this hotel about 3 months before our arrival. It’s not easy to find hotels that offer direct booking, so I booked a standard room via Expedia for just over €165, including breakfast. Yes, did we tell you that life was expensive in Iceland?

The entrance is quite simple

Arrival

We arrive at the hotel just after 8.30pm. It’s hard to get your bearings with the sun, as it virtually never sets in summer.

A piano is available in the lobby

We are greeted by the charming receptionist who takes care of our arrival formalities. As the room was prepaid via Expedia, we leave our credit card as a guarantee for any extras, restaurant or bar.

The reception area is beautifully decorated

The receptionist told us that she had upgraded us to a superior room – a pleasant surprise!

Once again, the Icelandair Hotels sign has been masked by a sticker.

We’re given our (now rare) physical key and take the elevator to the second floor.

Room

The assigned superior room was therefore located on the 2nd floor of the property. The decor is truly contemporary, simple but stylish.

Our superior room was located on the second floor of the property.

On the right as you enter, you’ll find the bathroom, tastefully renovated, with a beautiful walk-in shower that’s hard to get out of…

IMG_3455
The property’s superb, contemporary bathroom.

The room itself is quite small. There’s a desk on the right, two armchairs and the bed on the left. There’s a desk on the right, two armchairs and the bed on the left. The view is of the mountains, not the sea this time.

A beautiful view, albeit a little obstructed
IMG_3460
A little too much furniture for the small bedroom space
IMG_3465
The signs are unmistakable: the signage is reminiscent of Icelandair Hotels, the property’s previous operator.

The bedding will be good and we’ll have a restful night.

Very comfortable bed

Finally, here is the video tour:

Hotel facilities

The property is really a stopover hotel, with no special facilities.

Food options

The hotel restaurant is located to the left of the lobby. You have to cross the bar to get there, and this is where all meals are served to customers.

The bar, stylish but uncomfortable

Fortunately, a number of cosier spaces are available

Dinner service

We’ll have dinner at the hotel shortly after our arrival, at around 8:45pm.

IMG_3472
The glassware is very elegant
IMG_3470
Some (hard) bread to start the meal

The menu is rather simple: 3 starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts.

IMG_3474
The elegantly presented salmon starter

As a starter, I’d opt for the fish soup, simple but good.

IMG_3475
The main course was very good, but a little too hearty

For the main course, I chose the chicken fillets, a very successful recipe.

It’ll be good, but not cheap!

Breakfast service

Breakfast is served buffet style from 7am to 10:30am.

IMG_3483
The breads are not very appetizing
IMG_3487
Some pastries and fruit, rather well presented
IMG_3486
The corner dedicated to cereal lovers
IMG_3485
The continental part of the buffet, but with elements of very average quality
IMG_3489
Warm items of decent quality

The elements are of rather low quality, and nothing really memorable.

IMG_3488
As always in Iceland, cod-liver oil

Departure

Check-out formalities will be completed quickly, but I won’t get the room bill. I would have to wait more than 15 days of back and forth with Expedia before my (simple) request is processed.

Bottom line

A very decent stay. We’ll surely return.
