Today’s itinerary

We leave the hotel around 8:30 a.m. for the east of Iceland, on a route that will take around 150 km to reach the lake.

Road 1 as scenic as ever, and the weather so changing

The road is lined with various fjords, about every 10 minutes on our route.

After about an hour’s drive, we reach the town of Hofn, where we can both fill up our gas tank and have a cup of coffee – much better than the one we had at the hotel – to start our itinerary.

The road is absolutely scenic, sometimes desert, sometimes very green, with magnificent waterfalls.

The driving experience is just extraordinary.

Námaskarð pass

Our first experience of the day will be a 30-minute hike to some recent volcanic formations: extraordinary colors that you can see in the photos.

The walk is very easy from the parking lot and takes between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your level of fitness.

Reykholt whirlpool baths

At the bottom of the pass, you’ll find the Reykholt bubbling baths: volcanic activity is such that all phenomena can be observed just a few hundred meters away: volcanic mud, bubbling mud baths and even smoke chimneys.
