While we were going to spend a long weekend in Hungary with my wife, Lufthansa, the airline for which we had booked our Paris-Debrecen tickets, started a hard labor dispute resulting in many delays and various cancellations.
I have already related my various adventures in an article, to tell you how well a 5 star airline treats its loyal customers in case of IRROP.
Here is the final itinerary of this disrupted trip:
| # | Type | Review |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Flight | Lufthansa Economy (operated by Eurowings), Paris-Munich, Airbus A319 |
| 2 | Hotel | Hilton Munich Airport |
| 3 | Flight | Lufthansa Economy, Munich-Budapest, Airbus A319 |
| 4 | Car | Sixt MyDriver (paid by Lufthansa), Budapest-Hajdúszoboszló, Mercedes S Class |
| 5 | Flight | Lufthansa Economy, Debrecen-Munich, Bombardier CRJ900 |
| 6 | Flight | Lufthansa Economy, Munich-Paris, Airbus A320-100 |
Booking
To manage this IRROP, Lufthansa had placed us in a hotel… Let’s say not necessarily in our standards, namely the Ramada Inn located in the airport area.
Well, it would have been acceptable for a few hours but here, we have a day to kill, and moreover, we booked with our American Express Platinum card which offers us many advantageous insurances in case of delay or cancellation… Namely the reimbursement of the hotel and food expenses up to 300€ per day.
Quickly, I analyze the possibilities and find Executive rooms still available at the Hilton Munich Airport, a property located right across from the terminals.
Arrival
We arrive after an Uber ride from the Ramada Inn of less than 10 minutes. It’s quite busy at check-in, as the property is hosting a trade show at the moment.
We wait less than 2 minutes to be taken in charge, the check-in being very well staffed. We are welcomed as loyal customers (I have Hilton Honors Gold status through my American Express card).
The Executive rooms are located in the newly constructed building, which also houses the Club Lounge.
Room
Our room is on the 5th floor of the property. The corridors to get there are very elegant and “smell new”.
The entrance leads to a very nice bathroom, with a walk-in shower.
The room itself is very elegant, furnished in a mountain style with light woods on the walls and a very comfortable gray carpet.
The bed was extremely comfortable and we had a very restful night.
To finish, a video tour:
Hotel facilities
The hotel has extensive facilities such as a fitness room, spa and pool, but our short stay won’t allow us to take advantage of them, unfortunately.
Food options
The hotel’s dining options are surprisingly short for such a large property. We will enjoy an aperitif in the Club Lounge, followed by dinner at the hotel’s restaurant located near the reception.
Club Lounge
The hotel’s Club Lounge is located in the Executive Room building, away from the other rooms. It is located in the basement and is very elegantly decorated.
In Happy Hour, the selection is rather large, and the alcohols are self-service. Everything is of acceptable quality.
During the day, a selection of snacks is offered.
Our flight being very early, we will not take advantage of it for the breakfast service.
Restaurant
We chose to dine at the hotel’s restaurant on the evening of our stay. In the main restaurant, there is a choice between a buffet and an a la carte order, which we will choose.
It was good, without being exceptional, and rather expensive for Germany.
Departure
The departure formalities will be fast and easy, and the invoice will be sent by e-mail.
Bottom line
An unexpected stay due to an unforeseen IRROP at Munich airport, but an excellent stay (thanks to AMEX insurance)! We’ll return under better circumstances!
