Review : The New York EDITION

After a short stay in Canada that gave us a taste of winter and mountain recreation, we decided to spend a few days in New York, and stayed at the New York EDITION, located near Union Square.

A look back on this pleasant stay.

Booking

As usual, I proceeded to book this hotel through the Marriott Bonvoy app, using my business’ corporate code.

I chose this hotel because I wanted to try it, and I’ve been around the acceptable New York Marriott properties a bit… The W Times Square and the Element disappointed me, the Four Points Times Square a bit too basic and the W Hoboken too far.

The brand is supposed to be the millenials‘ version of Ritz-Carlton, so it was worth a try! Here we go for 4 nights at $450 a night!

Arrival

A few days before my arrival, I see in the app an upgrade to a Deluxe Corner room, with a great view of Manhattan.

The hotel seen from the garden

We arrive from Montreal to JFK airport, and arrive in Manhattan in 45 minutes by Uber. The hotel does not have a bellman outside despite its 5 stars and we have to enter our luggage ourselves.

The reception area in the lobby

I proceed to the check-in of our room. At both EDITION and The Ritz-Carlton, the loyalty program is only partially implemented, and breakfast will not be offered as a welcome gift. However, the upgrade is confirmed.

For once a sofa is empty in the lobby… I was able to take a picture of it!
The bar is very pleasant (and often full)

The service is relaxed, too relaxed for a property of this standing. Borderline disrespectful, New York style, you sometimes wonder who the customer is…

The decoration of the hotel is in a “cosy Scandinavian” style

Anyway, less than 2 minutes later, I am on my way to our room.

Elevator controls are not always easy to operate

Room

The assigned room was located on the 23rd floor of the property. Each floor has only a handful of rooms.

The door of our room

Ours, as the name suggests, was located on a corner, offering an interesting view of Lower Manhattan.

The superb view from our room
At night too!

The entrance is quite large, and has nice sized closets to store clothes and luggage.

A few similar cupboards are available on the whole surface of the entrance

Opposite the closet is the bathroom. Despite the space, only one sink has been installed, and the toilets are not separate. The shower is quite large.

The large shower

Le Labo toiletries are of very good quality.

The room itself consists of a lounge area with sofa and coffee table, and a very comfortable king size bed. The view from the bed is magnificent, over the entire Skyline.

The lounge area is quite small, but sufficient for two

The simple but striking decoration
Very comfortable bedding

Hotel facilities

The hotel has an in-house gym, but we will not use it during this stay. We will not use the spa either, well let’s say the massage rooms.

Food options

EDITION New York has a Michelin-starred restaurant in its midst, ClockTower, located on the property’s first floor.

The atmosphere of the restaurant in the evening

We had dinner there one evening, and breakfast one morning.

As for the breakfast, I didn’t take any pictures but I remember a rather decent but expensive service (From memory, $80 for two with tip).

For dinner, on the other hand, what a disappointment for a starred restaurant: basic dishes but above all service not at all up to par. Nearly $150 for this, it’s heartbreaking.

The only success of this dinner: the breads!
Basic lentil salad as a starter
The steak was without fulgurance

On the other hand, our test of the room service breakfast was excellent!

Departure

The departure formalities were simple. Most importantly, the hotel has lifted those horrible resort fees, and is doing so (without advertising it) for all Ambassador members. Well done!

Bottom line

A very good stay in a property with discreet luxury that we like very much. A quality hotel but a service so New York…
