Lufthansa boards an A380 in 20 minutes thanks to biometric boarding

The biometric boarding system implemented by Lufthansa in Los Angeles and Miami shows impressive results.

One of the worst irritants of the airport passenger experience is feeling like you have to show the same document over and over again when you have already been checked several times. And especially at the boarding gates.

To make this experience smoother, Lufthansa has been experimenting since 2018 with a facial recognition system that allows passengers to board without having to show any documents. He comes in front of a portal that checks by facial recognition and lets him pass if he is a passenger of the flight and if his identity is correct by relying on the database of the “Customs and Border Protection”.

With this device, an A380 boards in 20 minutes instead of the usual 40 minutes.

A device that we hope to see proliferate even if it will be necessary to find an agreement with the local authorities, the interest of testing in the United States being the size of the Customs and Border Protection database. We can imagine that in Europe, for example, it will be necessary to obtain authorizations in each country because of the lack of centralization of biometric data.
