A new twist in the interminable rescue of Alitalia: China Eastern is interested.
The good thing about Alitalia is that between announcements of interest and withdrawals there is always something to write about.
So after Lufthansa and Air France said no, after Delta decided it was urgent to wait an dEasyJet withdrew, it is China Eastern that is showing interest.
The Chinese airline, also a member of Skyteam and holder of 8.8% of the capital of Air France-KLM, would be ready to take 10% of the capital of the Italian airline, leaving 39% to Delta, the Italian State wanting to keep at least 51% in its hands and those of national investors.
A declaration of intent that is timely as Italy has fully embraced the Chinese “New Silk Road” project.
But in the end, this does not change much: everything is in the hands of Delta, whose decision to move forward or not on the file (and how) conditions everything. Knowing that Delta wants to have the means to influence the strategy of the airline and that the Italian government wants to protect the airline from a turnaround policy that is too hard on jobs (hence the withdrawal of Lufthansa), we are not ready to see the situation unblocked.
In the meantime Alitalia can continue to feed the chronicles of airlines in difficulty.
