Delta Airlines flight empties its tanks over a school

On January 14, Delta Airlines flight DL89 from Los Angeles to Shanghai experienced an engine problem, forcing a return flight to Los Angeles.

Following safety procedures, he emptied his tanks before landing without any problems.

On the other hand for an unknown reason it carried out this release above zones of dwellings and especially of schools as this video shows it.

About sixty people were taken care of by the firemen.

The airline did not provide any explanation and said it was investigating the reasons for the incident.

Apparently and contrary to usual practice, the crew did not inform ATC of their need to jettison fuel, in which case they would have indicated an appropriate area and altitude. This being said, one can wonder why the control did not spontaneously think of it, the plane having left the same airport some time before
