Finnair aims for carbon neutrality

In the series “airlines take environmental change seriously even if the general public has a biased view of the subject“, Finnair has just announced its carbon neutrality ambition.

The airline recently announced its intention to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 20205 and to become carbon neutral by 2045. For the record, let’s note that Delta, which has an incomparably larger fleet, has set the same objective for 2030.

The main actions planned are:

– An investment of 3.5 to 4 billion euros in its fleet to reduce emissions from its intra-European flights by 15%.

– Invest 60 million in sustainable development between 2020 and 2025 without knowing concretely how this will materialize.

– Reduction of the weight carried on board, including the end of duty free in the European Union on April 29 in favor of pre-flight orders.

– Reduce the use of single-use plastics by 50% by 2022.

– Reduce food waste by 50% by 2022.

– Improve operational efficiency to optimize fuel consumption for each flight.

– Offset business travel emissions.

– Encourage passengers to offset their carbon emissions.

– Increase the use of biofuels

For example, reducing the weight on board (e.g. by eliminating duty free or using lighter dishes) by 50 to 100 kg per flight reduces fuel consumption by 70,000 kg and CO2 emissions by 220,000 kg.

Announcements are multiplying in the field but as we said in the article mentioned at the top of this one it still lacks a bit of pedagogy to change the image of the industry to the general public. And one more press release will not change anything.

Until then on Travelguys we will follow a little better the announcements of the actors of the sector of the work (not complicated so much they put them forward) to compare them but also to try to follow the results in the duration, matter on which the communications are a little less numerous even if factually the results are there.
