Airport extensions: Nice OK, London KO

Two court decisions were rendered during the week that are not very consistent.

In the United Kingdom a court has invalidated the project to build a third runway at London Heathrow. The reason: the project does not take sufficiently into account the engagement born from the Paris agreements. Victory for the defenders of the environment, but it is not clear whether the project for a third runway has been definitively rejected or whether it is the modalities of the existing project that have been rejected, in which case it would be sufficient to review the project.

In the meantime, this is bad news for a saturated Heathrow which will see Paris and probably Frankfurt pass it in the ranking of the busiest European airports. And with the Brexit not sure the British economy needed that.

Another story in Nice, where the project to extend Terminal 2, also contested by environmentalists, has been validated by the courts.

The airport is very pleased with this, stating that “Nice-Côte d’Azur Airport was the first airport in France to become carbon neutral. It is also the lowest emitter per passenger at the national level and the first to have committed to not emitting a single gram of CO2 within 10 years, without resorting to compensation. The project to adapt terminal 2 was therefore integrated into its zero carbon strategy from the start“.
