We thought Alitalia was finally saved and well it seems that it is not the case!
The set-up which consisted in the nationalization of the airline with the entry of Delta in its capital seemed to be definitively validated but the administrators decided otherwise and postponed their decision to October 15 to leave the possibility to the current investors to review their offer or to others to make one.
Obviously the Italian shareholders have not reached an agreement with Delta on the development of Alitalia’s routes to the USA. The amount Delta was willing to invest is also in question.
They would like Delta to go beyond the $100 million already planned, which the American airline is not opposed to. But it would like more control in exchange, which is out of the question for the Italians.
The inclusion of Alitalia in the joint venture with Virgin Atlantic, Air France-KLM and Delta also seems problematic.
Meanwhile, Alitalia’s long-haul business is recovering and doing quite well. Not enough to allow it to continue on its own, but perhaps enough to make the Italians feel a little less cornered than before?
