Intercontinental Hotels Group announced last year that it was taking a majority stake in Regent Hotels. Although Regent hotels previously appeared in search results on the hotelier’s website, they were not eligible to earn or use points in the IHG Rewards Club program.
This will happen as of February 1, 2019, with Regent Hotels joining the IHG loyalty program.
IHG’s move was intended to not only re-launch the prestigious Regent brand, but also to improve its positioning in the luxury sector where it was only present through the Intercontinental brand.
Regent Hotels has 6 properties worldwide (Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Porto Montenegro, Berlin, Chongqing) with 2,000 rooms, which IHG plans to expand to 40 with 10,000 rooms.
Two new properties are already planned with the opening of a new hotel in Kuala Lumpur and the transformation of the renowned Intercontinental Hong Kong into Regent. It is unclear whether future regents will be primarily acquisitions and new openings or whether other Intercontinental will be rebranded.
