SLS Las Vegas, a Tribute Portfolio Resort : Very nice room, not really on the strip…

As part of our vacation in the American West, I booked two nights at the SLS Las Vegas, supposedly located on the Strip. If the hotel is of good quality, and it is possible to sleep without hearing any noise, its distance from the attractions is problematic. Look back on a pleasant stay but not so much.

Booking

I made the reservation at this property several months before my stay. I had originally booked for one night only, happy to spend more time at the Grand Canyon. But the price of the room in this highly touristy place and the low rates in Las Vegas made me change my mind, and I extended this stay to 2 nights.

I booked as usual on the SPG website, and got my corporate discount. I also used a Suite Night Award to secure the upgrade upon arrival. The latter was accepted a few days before the start date of the stay.

Arrival

We arrived at the hotel by car. As in most Las Vegas resorts, parking is free, to facilitate the movement of customers mainly for the casino part.

However, the walk with luggage is a bit complex to access the reception. Nothing too serious, but it is quite long.

The check-in counter was rather unstaffed. This meant that we had to wait a good ten minutes before being taken care of in the priority line. In fact, the priority line was the only one that had receptionists.

When it came time to complete the formalities, and despite the online check-in I had done beforehand and the prepayment of part of the room, my credit card did not work. After a quick call to American Express, it turned out that it was the hotel that was not making the authorization request. The front desk manager resolved the problem very quickly.

Our Suite upgrade was confirmed, and I chose the breakfast as a Platinum benefit. This breakfast is a $30 credit on the breakfast menu to be taken in the hotel diner until 11am each day.

Room

The suite we enjoyed was located on the 28th and top floor of the property. This floor is very nice because the windows go from floor to ceiling, so the rooms arevery bright.

You can see from the outside of the hotel that this is not the case for the rooms below, at least in this building.

Upon entering the hotel room, you will find a spacious entrance and a lounge area. This one is very well equipped with a sofa, an armchair, and a coffee table.

Then comes the room itself, which contains a very comfortable King size bed, a rather impractical desk, and access to the bathroom.

The bathroom, although spacious, reveals the age of the building. It is a bit old-fashioned, the white decoration is very bland, and it is finally not very pleasant. The shower, although large, is not easy to use for 2 people. The presence of a single sink is surprising, considering the size of the bathroom.

Hotel facilities

The SLS Las Vegas is a resort. This means that the facilities are quite extensive. In addition to a casino, quite classic but very elegant, it has a very large outdoor pool, unfortunately animated during the day by a DJ.

It turns out that the clientele is not necessarily very elegant, no control being carried out at the entrance of the swimming pool to check that the customers are from the hotel.

IMG_2617

I think this is a common feature of all the pools in Las Vegas, as we saw extensive advertising on the strip touting each pool, with Free access if you drink.

IMG_2616

The hotel is equipped with a fitness room that we will not try this time.

Restaurants

We only tried the breakfast in this hotel.

It is served in the hotel’s Diner, open 24 hours a day.

However, breakfast is only available from 6:00 am to 11:00 am, although it seems to be available all day for the casino clientele. We made good use of the $30 credit provided as a Platinum benefit, having each of the two mornings a superb bacon-filled omelet, and excellent gluten-free banana pancakes.

Nothing to say about the breakfast, except that the $30 credit is easily reached, and an extra $20-$30 is needed for a good breakfast for two.

Departure

For the departure formalities, we used the express check-out, and received the invoice a few minutes later on our mailbox. Nothing to say.

Bottom line

This is a solid hotel on the strip. On the other hand, to visit Las Vegas and to be able to visit the different activities and casinos, it is not necessarily the ideal location. It will very often force you to take an Uber or to take the very practical but rather expensive monorail. If you want to be more in the heart of the action, I can only recommend the Cosmopolitan, hotel Marriott, the Venetian or the Palazzo which are Intercontinental hotels.
