Last night we learned from a very reliable internal source that Air France will be rolling out a new long-haul business product in the next few months.
An à la carte business class
Inspired by the protocol in use in some Gulf or Asian airlines, Air France will offer a totally à la carte service, with the possibility of lunch/dinner at any time, several times, etc.
3 destinations are initially targeted: New York-JFK, Singapore-Changi and Tokyo-Haneda.
Exacerbated competition
Premium competition is raging on some routes, mainly in North America and Asia.
Historically, Gulf and Asian airlines have a very high level of service.
Here is an example of a menu served on Etihad in Business, which already offers a la carte service:
Air France therefore had to offer a similar service on its most competitive routes.
A rise in service quality that goes hand in hand with that of the cabin
Air France is (slowly) retrofitting its long-haul cabins. The BEST cabin, in Business, offers a completely flat seat-bed and access to the aisle for all passengers:
Air France is therefore finally reaching the best level in the world, as desired by the CEO of the Air France-KLM groupat the end of 2012.
