Lufthansa presents its paid catering offer on medium-haul routes

As announced this winter, catering on board Lufthansa medium-haul aircraft in economy class will henceforth be subject to a charge. Following in the footsteps of Swiss, which presented its own some time ago, Lufthansa has just unveiled its eco menu.

What’s the offer based on journey duration?

As with Swiss, the service will depend on the duration of the flight.

On flights of 30 minutes or less, passengers are entitled to a chocolate. For up to 60 minutes, a bottle of water is also provided. After 60 minutes (50 at Swiss), passengers will be offered a menu with paid dishes.

Lufthansa’s medium-haul menu

To begin with, in the speech the emphasis is on the “healty” and sustainable side. So fashionable that doubt will always exist.

The dishes come from dean&david, a Munich-based business whose success story is “Made in Germany”: healthy eating, high-quality fresh ingredients and sustainable consumption are the hallmarks of the offerings from the young start-up dean&david. At least according to the official communication.

As for the coffee, it comes from Dallmayr, ‘one of Germany’s best-known coffee brands, said to be synonymous with excellent product quality and service. And to keep things sustainable, the company is also engaged in development projects in Ethiopia, supporting reforestation programs and the construction of a school.

We’ll let you take a look at the 10-page menu before giving you our opinion.

The presentation is beautiful, even if, from our point of view, it’s perhaps a little less premium than Swiss. But we don’t eat the menu, we eat what it offers, so let’s take a closer look at the dishes.

There are no real surprises on this “Buy On Board” menu, which features the great classics of the moment: small snacks and a few more elaborate dishes, all with a very pronounced “healthy” touch, at least more so than at Swiss. No cold cuts or burgers here! Unlike Swiss, the Lufthansa menu doesn’t seem to offer hot dishes!

On the other hand, it’s slightly less expensive than its the “sister” airline.

Our opinion: good without more

Naturally, the comparison with Swiss is obvious, and we don’t think that the Lufthansa menu is the winner. It’s less premium, less appealing, lacks hot dishes and gives the impression of being less rich. But maybe we’re not totally in the target.

After that, there’s only one truth: the one of in-flight testing. It’s really only after you’ve tried both that we’ll be able to tell you what’s really on your plate.

Meanwhile, we’ll make the same point as for all the airlines switching to “Buy on Board”. It’s all very well to say that it’s to improve performance, and that seems to be the case all the same. But if this is not accompanied by a reduction in ticket prices, the customer will always feel like the big loser.
