Review: Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza, Executive Room. Very average.

Booking

The reservation was made online on the Marriott app to ensure the best rate. I had booked a standard room and some time before my arrival my reservation was updated to show an upgrade to an executive room.

Location of the Marriott Singapore

The hotel is on Orchard Road, in the middle of the commercial center of the city, close to many malls and the St Regis Singapore hotel. Is it a good location? It depends on your purpose.

If you are on a business trip perhaps the Westin will be better located. If you want to be closer to the historic center I prefer the JW Marriott.

As I was only there for one night, this factor didn’t matter to me but I tend to avoid the mess of Orchard Road when I’m in Singapore and get closer to the center so if I had been there for a longer stay I would have surely made another choice.

Arrival and Check In at the Marriott Singapore

I arrived from the airport by cab at a busy hour, which confirmed that Orchard Road was not necessarily the most relevant choice.

As soon as I get out of the car I am taken in charge by a bellman.

He will take care of my suitcase which will be delivered in my room a little later and indicates me the check-in.

The lobby of the hotel is very busy but I am immediately taken in charge in the line reserved for the “loyal” customers.

The style does not deny the Chinese influence. The first thing that strikes me and that I had forgotten for lack of regularly frequenting the Marriott brand is the interior fragrance, the olfactory signature of the brand that looks more like cheap detergent and that I find neither pleasant nor premium, far from it.

Having done my “mobile check in” online the formalities will be very fast. I am informed of my upgrade and I go to my room for a well-deserved shower after the 21 hours of travel that brought me here.

I won’t say anything about the apparent stinginess of the upgrade because I’m only there for a short night, the hotel looks very full to me (even though it’s huge) and it’s partly under renovation which may explain the thing. But it will of course contribute to my overall experience.

The Executive Room at the Marriott Singapore

What is the difference between my standard room and the executive room I was upgraded to? It is slightly larger and located on the upper floors of the hotel.

Here it is:

IMG_1643

I especially appreciate the office area which is always convenient for working.

IMG_1642

The bedding is of very good quality and is comfortable even if I confess, being completely jetlagged and having to leave early for the airport the next morning I did not especially find sleep.

The bathroom is a very decent size and overall very flattering in appearance.

IMG_1644

The shower is large and you can even sit in it.

IMG_1645

So it all looks very decent.

Nevertheless, in the image of the hotel, it looks both new and old. New because we can see that the hotel has been at least partially renovated, old because the materials and colors chosen bring us back to the time when it was built. And I’m not even talking about that stinky indoor perfume.

In short, it’s comfortable but absolutely without personality or charm and it reminds us a bit of the old airport Sheratons that we would have liked to see bulldozed.

The video to finish even if considering the product I could have done without it.

The overall style of the Marriott Singapore

The full name of the hotel is Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza and the least we can say is that from the outside the Chinese affiliation cannot be denied.

IMG_1651

Everything else follows from this with, as I said, a decoration and materials not necessarily pleasant or even sometimes at the limit of good taste.

Moreover the hotel, of big size, is a real factory, it swarms of people, in short not pleasant at all. A hotel where you pass, not a hotel where you stay.

So you get it, I’m not a fan.

Fitness and pool

If you can criticize the taste, you can’t criticize the facilities.

The hotel has a beautiful swimming pool in an elevated floor.

IMG_1657

All around are rooms and suites that, for the time being, if not beautiful, should provide a rather nice experience.

IMG_1659

Note that this area was partially under construction as part of the renovation of the hotel.

The hotel also has a nice fitness room, not blind as it is still seen too much.

IMG_1676

Given the brevity of my stay I did not try the spa.

Restaurant and bars at the Marriott Singapore

Having spent my life eating on the three flights that brought me here, not counting the lounges, I had no desire to do justice to the hotel’s restaurants, so I settled for the Executive lounge for a quick snack.

It is located on the 27th floor and offers a beautiful view of the city but not necessarily its most beautiful part.

IMG_1669

It is of correct size but considering the size of the hotel I find it a bit undersized. At rush hour it is not easy to get a seat.

IMG_1672

And I’m not a fan at all of the style with the covers on the chairs…but it is consistent with the rest of the hotel.

IMG_1670

On the other hand the buffet is good and varied and the service very good. Finally, let’s say that as a European we find it very good but we are in fact just at the level of the Asian standards and especially Singaporean.

All this allowed me to make a fresh and light plate…but very good.

The staff and the service

My interactions with the staff were very limited: at check-in and in the lounge. But it was always friendly and very professional.

Nothing to complain about.

Check-out

As usual I did my mobile check-out on the Marriott mobile app which saves me from having to go through the front desk again and waste unnecessary time on paperwork.

So I left the next day at dawn, which allowed me to take some pictures of the empty hotel. I prefer it that way.

My opinion on the Marriott Singapore

Well, as I wrote, for a stay of less than 12 hours I mainly targeted the rate because neither the location nor the property particularly attracted me.

So the Marriott Singapore is a decent hotel. The service keeps its promise, for the rest it has neither charm nor originality, I can even say that it does not look like much and that the ant-hill side is rather unpleasant. To cut a long story short: it doesn’t exude happiness.

No bad surprises but no good ones. A place to stay for a night, not a longer stay.
