Delta Hotel Richmond, VA: Moderately successful renovation, non-existent service

For one of my last trips of 2023, I had to go to Virginia for a short business meeting.

After two flights from Boston via Charlotte, I arrived at the hotel early in the night.

Booking

I booked this property 3 weeks before my arrival using the Marriott Bonvoy app and my company’s corporate code.

For $150 a night, I booked a standard room for one night.

As my return flight left after 8pm, I contacted my Marriott Ambassador to use the Your24 benefit to secure an 8pm check-out. I wasn’t expecting this, but would receive a positive reply the next day.

The day before my arrival, I asked my Ambassador to request an upgrade. She promptly did so, and on the morning of my arrival I found myself upgraded to a Studio, one of the most spacious suite categories.

Arrival

I arrived at the hotel shortly after midnight. Having done my mobile check-in in the afternoon, I had received my mobile key directly on my mobile in the early evening, and I can go straight to my suite without even stopping at the reception. Handy when you’re tired like I was.

My room rate included breakfast, so there was no need to adjust the welcome benefit either.

Suite

My suite was located on the 13th floor of the property.

The elevators did not require to use a room key to activate them.

It was equipped with a double door, a classic feature of the largest suites in a hotel.

The entrance led into a small vestibule that served the 3 rooms that made up this suite.

To the left was a small kitchen, with coffee machine, kettle, small microwave and refrigerator.

Opposite was the studio proper, with the living room on the left and its sofa and a decent-sized desk, and on the right the sleeping area with its king-size bed. A swivel TV allowed to watch either in bed or on the sofa.

Finally, to the right of the vestibule was the bathroom, equipped with a walk-in shower (albeit with very limited pressure), washbasin and WC.

Hotel facilities

The hotel has an indoor swimming pool and a gym.

Pool

The swimming pool was located on the first floor of the hotel and was accessible using your room card. I did not use it, but it seemed usable 24 hours a day. It was quite small, but for a downtown hotel in a medium-sized city, it’s a nice feature.

Gym

The gym was also located on the first floor of the hotel, next to the swimming pool.

It was fairly well equipped and I did make good use of it for my cardio session on the morning of my stay.

Catering

Food and beverage outlets were fairly limited in the hotel. The Quench Food + Spirits restaurant was open for breakfast and dinner. Nothing available for lunch, and a few convenience snacks were available in a small area near reception.

Quench Food + Spirits – Breakfast

On the morning of my stay, after a good workout, I went to the hotel’s restaurant, Quench, located on the reception mezzanine.

The welcome was very good… But I found the offer to be awful, with those disgusting buffets!

Avoid if it’s not included in your rate.

Service

Service was simply non-existent.

On several occasions, my door was knocked on while the Do Not Disturb sign was up, even during customer meetings. Unacceptable.

Departure

Check-out formalities were straightforward, as I used the mobile Check-out via the Marriott Bonvoy app.

Note that I forgot a hoodie in the closet, and my Ambassador arranged it to be sent to my home free of charge – I received it the day after I got home!

Bottom line

A large suite, but that’s about all the positives from this stay.

Running a hotel requires passion, and that’s something probably missing from management at the Delta Hotel Richmond.
