Mexico D4: Chichen Itza

For our fourth day in Mexico, we chose to make an excursion to the Mayan temple of Chichen Itza, located in the Yucatan region.

Chichen Itza

The temple is located about 3 hours drive from the hotel area of Cancun.

The road is currently under construction along most of the route, adding approximately 30 minutes to travel time. Two tolls are required before arriving at the site.

Attention, as the previous day, the parking is limited and we had to park in an unofficial zone for 60 pesos.

There too you have to queue to buy your ticket. We will wait about 20 minutes.

Attention: the entrance fee is 85 pesos (payable in cash only) but a lot of taxes bring the price of the entrance to more than 500 pesos for foreigners! Fortunately these taxes are payable by card and all major cards are accepted (including Amex).

There too, the site is exceptional, especially when the affluence is rather low as during our visit.

Cenote Ik-Kil

After the visit of the mythical temple and on the way back to Cancun, we stop in this cenote, much less wild than the one of the day before… But just as impressive, in another style! We will bathe there with pleasure for 150 pesos per person.

Bottom line

Another busy day. Be careful, it is still tiring to drive almost 7 hours, so take regular breaks!
