Booking

We made the reservation for this hotel on the Marriott Bonvoy website. Not much choice in Hiroshima, this is the only possible hotel at Bonvoy. So we made the reservation at the Sheraton Grand Hiroshima at 150€ per night + Tax.

Arrival

A few days before the arrival, I receive an email from the General Manager of the hotel asking me for the details of my arrival in Hiroshima. I tell him the Shinkansen timetable from Osaka, and he confirms all the details of my stay.

The day before I arrived, I noticed that I had been upgraded to a Club Corner Suite, the highest category in the property. Excellent!

The Link @ Sheraton space may look outdated, but access to a printer is always nice

We arrive in Hiroshima by Shinkansen in the late morning. On our way out of the station, we see a sign with our name on it, an employee has come to pick us up! We follow him, after he has taken care of our luggage, to check-in in the lobby (located on the 3rd floor of the hotel).

Reception staff ready to welcome guests

It is the General Manager himself who welcomes us, gives us his card, and has the Head of Reception proceed with the formalities. The latter asks us if we need a late check-out, which we refuse as we will leave in the morning for Okayama.

Room

Our suite was located on the top floor of the hotel, on the same floor as the Club Lounge.

The entrance leads to the office and the large lounge, which offers a panoramic view of the city. Une prestation de bienvenue a été déposée à notre attention sur la table basse. This lounge has its own toilet so that any guests do not have access to the sleeping area.

The view from the lounge is superb
I love the welcome service, very local
Other little treats will have been brought to us with the night service
A Nespresso machine and plenty of bottled water are available in the room

Between the lounge and the bedroom is the bathroom and the wardrobe. The bathroom has two basins, but also two showers and a bath, all with a beautiful panoramic view as well.

The wardrobe is rather spartan
Two basins allow a couple to prepare at the same time
Le Grand Bain toiletries have replaced the horrible tangerine shampoos from Sheraton
The interior of the shower and bath area
Unfortunately, the bath does not have a view
On the other hand, each of the showers is near a window that offers a beautiful view of the city
Fluffy bathrobes are available

The room is also large, and also has a space to relax and watch the steady stream of Shinkansen trains at Hiroshima Station.

The room is also very pleasant to look at the view
A beautiful bookcase is positioned in the office
A nice size desk is installed in front of this bookcase
The bed will turn out to be of average quality, the mattress being a bit hard

To finish, a video tour:

A long virtual tour for a very, very large room

Hotel facilities

The hotel has a fitness room located on one of the lower floors of the hotel, as well as a spa.

But be warned, and this is the first time I’ve seen this: access to the spa and pool is charged, even for Platinum members and above, unless you have already booked a Club room. We’ll pay this time, and have the pool all to ourselves, but still… I found it inappropriate.

Access to the swimming pool, which we were charged for
The excellent state of cleanliness of the changing rooms is reassuring
However, as everywhere in Japan, modesty is not the order of the day
One of the showers in the changing rooms
A steam room was available in the changing rooms
As well as a sauna
A cold bath allows you to cool down after a hammam or sauna

Food options

The hotel has several restaurants, one of which is more international in scope and located near the lobby, and another Japanese one located on another floor.

Miyabi-Tei Japanese Restaurant – Dinner Service

We will have dinner at the hotel’s Japanese restaurant.

The restaurant has a beautiful view

Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador members receive a 50% discount on all dining in the hotel.

The excellent amuse-bouche at the beginning of the meal to refresh the palate
A wonderful selection of sushi

The service is perfect. I would choose a nice selection of sushi, while my wife would have a Wagyu beef of exceptional quality and which will be the best eaten in its life.

The beef, of exceptional quality, served to my wife

International restaurant – Breakfast service

Platinum members and above can choose to have breakfast in the lounge or the restaurant. I will choose the restaurant thinking to have a wider selection… Unfortunately, the quality of the buffet is rather mediocre, and we will have a meagre breakfast that morning.

The fruit juices will be of fairly good quality
The fruit was rather average
The dairy products were unappetizing
Les pains seront aussi de qualité moyenne
I’m not even talking about the cold cuts and cheeses which were really not good
The French toast on the other hand was absolutely delicious
We wonder what pasta with tomato sauce was doing there
The quality is also very average in the classic hot breakfast items
Some local delicacies, a little strange looking but quite edible
Japanese condiments will prove to be excellent
And are a wonderful accompaniment to rice cooked to perfection
Asian options such as these pickled vegetables looked better

The view is nevertheless nice.

Breakfast table with view

Club Lounge – Happy Hour

The decoration of the Club Lounge is very nineties

The happy hour in the club lounge is quite lively – the buffet items are however not very interesting. The alcohol is of average quality and the snacks smell reheated.

The selection of alcohols is a bit sparse
The sake selection was of high quality
The red wine was of very good quality
Cold drinks were available all day
The choice of a Dolce Gusto machine for hot drinks is a bit cheap…
… But allows for a wider choice of drinks than just coffee
The cold buffet is a bit simplistic
A bit of fried fat…
Some condiments for dipping
The roast chicken was delicious
Some pastries and crackers are available

Departure

The departure formalities will be simple, and we will be quickly released to the station to take our Shinkansen to Okayama.

Bottom line

An excellent stay. The welcome was great, the upgrade exceptional. The Japanese restaurant is absolutely fabulous, but the breakfast buffet is a disappointment. The paid access to the spa is absolutely unworthy (not seen in any other hotel in Japan by the way).
