Lufthansa: a paid offer on long-haul routes too

Lufthansa is changing its service offering on certain long-haul routes to include, as of December 1, a paying service in addition to the free service.

What does Lufthansa’s long-haul paid offer look like

Unlike the medium-haul segment, where the free offer has disappeared altogether in favor of a “Buy on Board” offer, on the long-haul segments it’s a menu of complementary snacks.

In other words, customers will still get the same service, but they can also treat themselves to extras.

Here’s an extract of the menu.

As you can see, this is really a complementary offer. Is it expensive? Not really? Is it petty? Totally.

A deterioration in the offer that doesn’t say its name

Just as when the airline stopped offering snacks and drinks in economy class on medium-haul flights, it was presented as a gesture in favor of the customer. Every time, it’s like reading “since we can’t satisfy our customers with free stuff they don’t choose, they might as well pay for what they want”. To which we reply: “and free stuff that pleases, don’t you know how to do that?”.

In short, if you look at things from a distance, nothing changes on Lufthansa’s free offer, and on top of that you can treat yourself to paid snacks. But only if you look at things from a distance.

Closer examination reveals that, until recently, the offer of liquor on the paidmenu was part of the free service.

It’s only a short step from there to thinking that, in time, the standard free offer will gradually lose some of its elements, which will “migrate” to the paid category, such as alcoholic beverages or the snack served before arrival…a step we haven’t yet taken. But we’ll be keeping a close eye on the situation.

Bottom line

Since December 1, on some of its long-haul flights, Lufthansa has been offering a menu of paid snacks alongside its free offer. This will be extended to all long-haul services in the spring.

This offer is not just complementary: it also includes products that used to be served free of charge.

There’s no telling how far the airline can go in the future in downgrading its long-haul economy offer.
