Lu Chao, a 28 year old man, was traveling on Lucky Air between Ningbo and Anqing and this was the first airplane flight of his life. At the time of boarding and to bring good luck to the flight he threw a coin into the engine of the plane.
His gesture was noticed and the airline immediately cancelled the flight. Needless to say, the damage that a metal element thrown into an engine can cause with a possible fatal outcome.
He was immediately put in jail and the airline sued him for $21,000 in damages to cover the costs of the flight cancellation and subsequent technical inspections.
In his defense our poor Lu said that the airline had not made any announcement saying that this practice was forbidden while in China throwing a coin to bring luck is a common practice.
The court of Anging did not seem sensitive to his arguments since he has just been sentenced to $17,000 in compensation for the airline, in addition to the 10 days he spent in prison.
Of course it is an act with very serious consequences, but one cannot help but feel a little sorry for Lu, victim of his ignorance and good will.
Morality he still hasn’t made his first flight.
