Sheraton Saigon: a solid performance but it is showing its age

End of my Vietnamese peregrinations of the year with a return to Saigon where after having tested the Meridien I go to the Sheraton Saigon.

Compared to Le Meridien, the Sheraton Saigon is even better located, right in the center, in the heart of offices, hotels and very close to most of the historical monuments of the city.

Reception

The lobby is large and open.

I arrive at the reception desk. Given my platinum status, I was escorted to the club lounge to check in. The formalities were completed in a flash and the standard room I had reserved was upgraded to an executive suite.

I headed there right away.

The room

The corridors and the carpeting are very ” Vintage Sheraton “. Not my thing.

Sheraton Saigon

In two words: it is big, very big. But old-fashioned. In a general way without that being redhibitory, the hotel starts to make its age and its decoration of the Nineties suffers the comparison compared to more recent properties. Don’t get me wrong: it’s clean, not dusty.

The door opens into a large living room with a lounge area and a good-sized office area.

The furniture and the hi-fi system will confirm my general feeling about the decoration of the rooms. A basket of fresh fruit was waiting for me.

Then comes the bedroom. Also large in size, one feels at ease.

The bedroom has a second access from the entrance hallway, via a large dressing room that also leads to the bathroom.

The bathroom is equipped with a shower, a bathtub and is also of good size.

Located on the corner and on the upper floors, the executive suite of the Sheraton Saigon offers a clear view of the city.

As usual, let’s end this visit with a video.

Hotel facilities

The hotel has a beautiful swimming pool on the terrace. Surrounded by other buildings it doesn’t give such a nice view but at least you can breathe.

The pool is surrounded by the gym and the spa.Let’s start with the gym.

Large, bright and well equipped, there’s nothing to complain about.

As for the spa, if the treatments are of good quality without being exceptional, the fact that the facilities such as sauna or hammam are not accessible for free even for a platinum member or a guest staying in a suite is a pinginess that is fortunately rare nowadays.

Lounge et restauration.

The Sheraton Saigon has several bars and restaurants, some with excellent reputations. I didn’t try any of them for two reasons: one is that I ate most of my meals outside, and the other is that the lounge available to certain room categories and high-status guests in the loyalty program was simply amazing.

While we can sometimes complain about the smallness of some lounges or the weakness of the offer which is proposed there, nothing of that here.

First of all – and this is the first time I’ve seen this – the lounge occupies two levels. It is also very well decorated and comfortable.

The variety of the hot and cold offer is impressive. Brief overview:

Even better…and never before seen in a hotel lounge, there was even a cook preparing dishes on demand in addition to the traditional buffet.

You might as well say that after an aperitif snack taken here there is not necessarily much room left for a restaurant.

Sheraton Saigon : bottom line and grades

The rooms are getting old, but the facilities are very honest and the Sheraton Saigon delivers a very solid service with no flaws. And without making you dream either. A little freshening up would be necessary in a fast-growing city where the opening of newer hotels will increasingly harm older properties that now need to upgrade.

Hotel: ideal location but the common areas, especially the corridors, could use some work. 8

Check-in / Check-out: smooth and trouble-free. 10

Room : huge, superb view but old-fashioned decoration. Remember that I had booked a standard room so for the price I will not be picky. 8

Catering: I only tested the lounge and it was worth 10.

Facilities: terraced swimming pool but would need a makeover, nice gym, stingy spa. 7

Service and attention:10.

Application of the loyalty program: customer recognition at check-in, nice upgrade.10

Experience for money: for a standard room around 100 euros per night, we can only put 9 (point lost for the decoration and the spa).
