Singapore airport creates “business bubble” despite border closure

It’s hard to live with closed borders and quarantine and distancing measures when you’re a business destination like Singapore, a place where people go to meet.

Remote communication tools aren’t everything, and there are times when it’s vital for people to meet. Not an easy task in the current context, given that the city-state has still not reopened its borders.

A bubble for businessmen

That’s why Singapore Changi airport has just launched Connect@Changi: a service that enables travelers from all over the world to have a face-to-face business meeting with a Singapore resident. A bit like a “business bubble”.

How does it work?

  • The traveler applies for a Safe Travel pass (required for business trips to Singapore when borders are closed) according to the current “connect@singapore” process”.
  • When he gets off his flight, he will be taken to the “connect@changhi” building and will not be allowed to leave until his return flight. He will need a negative COVID test before leaving for Singapore, and further tests will be carried out on arrival and after 7 and 14 days depending on the length of his stay.
  • For the duration of your stay, the traveler will be totally isolated. He will be provided with 3 meals a day in his room, and will have access to totally individual facilities (gym).
  • He will be able to meet premises in meeting rooms equipped with a specific ventilation system, where each interlocutor will be on one side of a totally airtight glass wall. If there are documents to be signed, they will be disinfected before being passed on to everyone.

A gadget?

What is the value of this system? It begs the question. Given the restrictions it imposes, videoconferencing is less restrictive and just as effective.

Perhaps for cultures where business requires physical encounters…or for those who really want to travel?
